The subject for studies is an aluminium cylindrical hollow specimen with external axial and part circumferential semi-elliptical surface crack undergoing fatigue loads. Both the optical microscope measurements and the crack opening…
This study aims at providing a better understanding of the effects of both microstructure and defect on the high cycle fatigue behavior of metallic alloys using finite element simulations of polycrystalline aggregates. It is well known…
This study investigates spall damage and failure in Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) pressure vessels under explosive internal loading using stimulated electric discharge. Analytical modeling, validation with published experimental…
Very often computations on structural elements or machine components subjected to variable loading require using an advanced finite element model. This paper reports the numerical implementation of a model for multiaxial cyclic…
The simulation of critical and subcritical crack propagation in heterogeneous materials is not a simple problem in computational mechanics. These topics can be studied with different theoretical tools. In the crack propagation problem it…
Although diffusional flow creep is often considered out of practical engineering applications, the need for a model capable to account for the resulting action of both diffusional and dislocation type creep is justified by the increasing…
Earthquake action is the main external factor which influences long-term safe operation of civil construction, especially of the high-rise building. Applying time-history method to simulate earthquake response process of civil construction…
Departing from pioneering Heyman modern rational investigations on the purely-rotational collapse mode of least-thickness circular masonry arches, the hypothesis that joint friction shall be high enough to prevent inter-block sliding is…
In this paper, a numerical tool able to solve fluid-structure interaction problems is proposed. The lattice Boltzmann method is used to compute fluid dynamics, while the corotational finite element formulation together with the Time…
An original simplified formula is proposed to estimate the load history caused by ballistic impacts characterized by the so-called bullet splash phenomenon, consisting in the complete bullet fragmentation with no penetration of the target.…
We analyse the problem of a simply supported steel beam subjected to uniformly distributed load, strengthened with a pre-stressed fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) laminate. We assume that the laminate is first put into tension, then bonded…
The paper reviews the existing approaches to calculating the destruction of solids. The main attention is paid to algorithms using a unified approach to the calculation of deformation both for nondestructive and for the destroyed states of…
The problem of constructing the multilevel physical model of inelastic deformation in steels allowing to take into consideration diffusionless solid-state phase (martensitic) transitions is considered. The model structure includes three…
An analytical investigation using ABAQUS/Explicit dynamic analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of using Micro/Nano silica in the presence of steel fibers on improving the dynamic response of reinforced concrete beams.…
This study is motivated from the collapse of an old masonry building in the Southern Italy. FEM analyses are carried out focusing on the influence of the contrasting wall on the stability of the vault. In the analyses, the structure is…
In the present work, the stress intensity factor (SIF) of a small embedded square-like flaw is calculated by means of a procedure based on the Oore-Burns integral. An explicit equation is given to evaluate the SIF along the two axes of…
The paper presents the numerical analysis of failure pressure of wall loss defect metallic pipelines and validate it with experimental results. An optimization of composite thickness for repair of wall loss defect pipeline is also carried…
The deformation behaviour and fracture mechanisms of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide 6 (PA 6) are investigated experimentally under different stress states and at different crosshead speeds of 1, 20 and…
Explicit and simple expressions for root compliance coefficients, which can be used to define root rotations and root displacements at the crack tip cross section of orthotropic cracked beams, are derived under general self-equilibrated…
This paper is devoted to the numerical and experimental study of ductile fracture in bulk metal forming of the 2017A-T4 aluminum alloy. From an experimental standpoint, the ductile fracture of the 2017A-T4 aluminum alloy is investigated…
The Bonora damage model was extended to account for shear-controlled damage. To this purpose, a new definition for the damage dissipation potential in which an explicit dependence on the third invariant of deviatoric stress was proposed.…
In the present work, the stress intensity factor (SIF) of embedded small cracks placed at the weld toe is calculated by means of two procedures based on the Oore-Burns integral. In the first approach, the defect is considered as a circular…
We analyse the problem of a simply supported beam, strengthened with a fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strip bonded to its intrados and subjected to bending couples applied to its end sections. A mechanical model is proposed, whereby the…
