A multiaxial incremental fatigue damage formulation using nested damage surfaces

Marco Antonio Meggiolaro, Jaime Tupiassú Pinho de Castro, Hao Wu

Multiaxial fatigue damage calculations under non-proportional variable amplitude loadings still remains a quite challenging task in practical applications, in part because most fatigue models require cycle identification and counting to…

Fatigue crack growth in additive manufactured products

A. Riemer, H. A. Richard, J.-P. Brüggemann, J.-N. Wesendahl

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a new innovative technique that allows the direct fabrication of complex, individual, delicate and high-strength products, based on their 3D data. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is one of the AM processes that…

The heat energy dissipated in a control volume to correlate the crack propagation rate in stainless steel specimens

G. Meneghetti, M. Ricotta

Metallic materials dissipate thermal energy when subjected to fatigue. Some of them, due a favorable combination of thermo-physical material properties, exhibit a significant temperature rise, which can be easily measured in-situ by means…

Effect of Carbon and Nitrogen content on deformation and fracture of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel

A. Molinari, M. Composta, C. Menapace

In questo lavoro è stato studiato l'effetto di modeste differenze nel contenuto di carbonio e di azoto sulla deformazione e il comportamento a frattura a temperatura ambiente di un acciaio inossidabile austenitico AISI 304. Nell'acciaio…

Near tip strain evolution under cyclic loading

J. Tong, Y.-W. Lu, B. Lin, Y. H. Tai, J.R. Yates

The concept of ratchetting strain as a crack driving force in controlling crack growth has previously been explored at Portsmouth using numerical approaches for nickel-based superalloys. In this paper, we report the first experimental…

On the applicability of Miner’s rule for multiaxial fatigue life calculations under non-proportional load histories

Marco Antonio Meggiolaro, Jaime Tupiassú Pinho de Castro, Samuel Elias Ferreira, Hao Wu

Fatigue design routines and computer codes must use some damage accumulation rule to deal with variable amplitude loadings (VAL), usually Palmgren-Miner (or Miner’s) linear rule for lack of a clearly better option. Nevertheless, fatigue…

A method for rapid estimation of residual stresses in metal samples produced by additive manufacturing

Alexey Fedorenko, Denis Firsov, Stanislav Evlashin, Boris Fedulov, Evgeny Lomakin

The mechanical methods for measuring residual stresses typically rely on so-called destructive techniques where some stress components can be determined based on part deflection after material removal (cutting, etching, drilling, etc.).…

Near tip strain evolution of a growing fatigue crack

M.-L. Zhu, Y.-W. Lu, C. Lupton, J. Tong

Near tip full-field strains in a growing fatigue crack have been studied in situ using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique in a compact tension specimen of stainless steel 316L under tension-tension cyclic loading. An error…
