In the past several numerical studies have addressed the ductile mode of fracture propagation. However, the brittle mode of pipeline failure has not received as much attention yet. The main objective of this study is to predict brittle…
This paper presents a case study in which identification of the controlling crack path was critical to identifying the root cause of the failure. The case involves the rupture of a 30-inch (0.76 m) natural gas pipeline in 2010 that…
Nowadays, an increasing number of oil and gas transmission pipes are constructed with high-strength low alloy steels (HSLA); however, many of these pipelines suffer from different types of hydrogen damages, such as hydrogen-induced…
Initiation and propagation of ductile fractures are a major consideration during the design of high-pressure pipelines. Consequences of a pipeline failure can be catastrophic thus structural integrity must be ensured over several decades.…
In this paper, the initial and maximum load was studied using the Finite Element Modeling (FEM) analysis during impact testing (CVN) of pipeline X70 steel. The Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) constitutive model has been used to simulate…
Limited by the mechanical properties of materials, silicon (Si) carbide insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) can no longer meet the requirements of high power and high frequency electronic devices. Silicon carbide (SiC) IGBT…
The paper presents the numerical analysis of failure pressure of wall loss defect metallic pipelines and validate it with experimental results. An optimization of composite thickness for repair of wall loss defect pipeline is also carried…
To meet the design requirements, different types of defects are often machined on the surface of fatigue components. Local stress concentration formed at the notch accelerate the initiation of fatigue crack, therefore greatly shorten the…
The variation of crack shape factor (a/c) during propagation has an important role on calculation of the stress intensity factor (SIF), where imprecise estimation of this latter can lead us to an inaccurate prediction of failure…
A durability method in view of cathodic protection is proposed to improve the corrosion fatigue resistance of AH 32 steel in seawater. By aid of corrosion fatigue tests, the effects of thermal spraying Zn (zinc) and Cr (chromium) coating…
A methodology of experimental research on hydrogen embrittlement of pipe carbon steels due to the transportation of hydrogen or its mixture with natural gas by a long-term operated gas distribution network is presented. The importance of…
In this study, the three-dimensional finite element method is used to analyze an API 5L X70 steel cylindrical pipeline subjected to an internal pressure load by calculating the stress intensity factors and the integral J at the peak of…
Risk based analysis of reverse hydro power plant penstock structural integrity is performed using fracture mechanics parameters. To assess its structural integrity, extensive testing of the full-scale prototype had been performed…
Improvement of nondestructive inspection techniques has allowed more frequent detection of closely spaced zones of non-metallic inclusions in pressure vessels made of low carbon steel. In the present study, closely spaced inclusions in an…
Structural failure assessment approaches take into account local parameters, specimen geometry, loading and material. In the case of welded joints, in addition to these parameters, consideration must be given to the effect of the…
Paper presents the analytical solution of the stress-strain state for a dented pipeline, based on the method of equivalent loads. First off all solution for a harmonic imperfection is found, then using Fourier series expansion a…
Strain-based design for offshore pipeline requires a considerable experimental work aimed to determine the material fracture toughness and the effective strain capacity of pipe and welds. Continuum damage mechanics can be used to limit the…
This study presents a hybrid framework integrating a physics-based corrosion model with a feedforward neural network (FNN) to predict corrosion rates and estimate the remaining useful life (RUL) of industrial pressure vessels for…
Slow strain rate stress corrosion test of X80 steel in the natural seawater are carried out to study to effect of dissolved oxygen on the sensitivity of stress corrosion. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined electrochemical…
Reliable discrimination of small damage states under operational variability requires uncertainty aware Structural Health Monitoring. A pipeline is presented that couples guided wave physics with supervised machine learning to classify…
The company DRC (pipe repair Department) located within the SONATRACH Company of oil and gas in Algeria, which is responsible for the repair of pipelines for the transport of gas or crude petroleum, will rehabilitate old pipes that have…
