A generalized numerical model for predicting the structural integrity of self-anchored cable-stayed suspension bridges considering both geometric and material nonlinearities is proposed. The bridge is modeled by means of a 3D finite…
In Portugal there is a number of old metallic riveted railway and highway bridges that were erected by the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, and are still in operation, requiring inspections and remediation…
The heavy rainfalls occurring in Italy in the last few years focused the attention on the vulnerability of the land and the related infrastructures. Critical situations involving losses of human life and deterioration or failure of…
A new formulation of a Logistic deterministic S-N curve is applied to fatigue data of metallic materials from ancient Portuguese riveted steel bridges. This formulation is based on a modified logistic relation that uses three parameters to…
Arch bridges play an important role in rural roads in China. Due to insufficient funds and a lack of management techniques, many rural arch bridges are in a state of disrepair, unable to meet the increasing transportation needs. Thus, it…
Orthotropic decks were applied to the long span bridges after World War II due to several advantages, such as light weight, high strength, few deck joints, durability, rapid construction, life-cycle economy. The fatigue problem of…
Movement joints are needed in bridges to accommodate longitudinal expansion and contraction. Enough joint width needs to be available to accommodate not only longitudinal expansion but also expected movements of joints during earthquakes.…
The structural form of a completed bridge is strongly affected by its structural form during construction. It follows that innovative construction processes sometimes produce innovative bridge designs. It is important to consider the…
In the maintenance work of cable configurations, which have limitations such as cables in cable-stayed bridges, suspenders in suspension bridges, and hangers in arch bridges, tension on the cables is required. The safety of the cable is…
During the past few decades, composite beams (steel I beam and concrete slab) have had a wide range of uses, particularly in bridge construction. This is due to its relatively low economic cost compared to individual steel structures or…
In this research, the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method is used for the drive-by health monitoring of bridges. Firstly, the problem of a half-trailer tractor moving over a bridge is formulated. Next, a Finite Element (FE) code is…
The goal of the authors’ investigations was determination of the fatigue crack growth in fragments of steel structures (of the puddled steel) and its cyclic behavior. Tested steel elements coming from the turn of the 19th and 20th were…
During an earthquake, the nonlinearity of the bridge structure mainly occurs at the supports, bridge piers and restrainers. When entering nonlinear stage, members of the bridge structure affect the elasto-plastic seismic response of the…
The present article aims to summarize the research study that was conducted the efficiency of methods and techniques designed for the detection and localization of faults in civil engineering structures, particularly in bridge structures.…
Infrastructure aging is an important problem nowadays, in particular for countries like Italy in which the main motorways were built 50 years ago. Huge budgets are necessary to keep infrastructure and bridges in service. In addition, the…
Fatigue tests and measurements of the volumetric distribution of metallurgical hydrogen in specimens cut from rolled I-beam 60Sh3 made of steel 10KhSND were carried out. Fatigue tests show a 20% reduction in fatigue limits compared to…
The study investigates the application of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in constructions of bridges. It highlights the main advantages of using FRP as a building material and points out its suitability for various structural…
Bridges are regarded as one of the most important components of transportation infrastructure. More and more repairs, inspections, alterations, and construction processes are required to maintain safe usage due to increasing travel demands…
This paper investigates the combined effect of corrosion and fatigue on the growth of cracks that arise from natural corrosion in steel bridges. It is shown that if these two effects need to be simultaneously analyzed. If not, then the…
There is a need for efficient techniques that could identify damages in structures such as in bridges, pipelines, buildings, dams, among others. In order to carry out continuous monitoring of structures, this paper proposes a new…
In order to promote the application of steel fiber recycled concrete in projects such as roads and bridges, 25 groups of steel fiber recycled concrete with different mix proportions were designed, taking the replacement rate of recycled…
Friction joints are used in steel structures submitted to cyclic loading such as, for example, in steel and composite bridges, in overhead cranes, and in equipment subjected to fatigue. Slip-critical steel joints with preloaded bolts are…
This research investigates cracking in Reinforced Concrete Structures (RCS), particularly in bridge abutments, box girders, and culverts. Cracks often appear even after the concrete has reached its full strength. The current American…
Europe has a number of ancient riveted metallic bridges, constructed during the second half of the 19th century up to the middle of the 20th century, which are still in operation. In this paper, a unified approach is presented to generate…
In the last four years, Italy experienced the collapse of five road bridge: Petrulla viaduct (2014), Annone (2016) and Ancona (2017) overpasses, Fossano viaduct (2017) and Polcevera (2018) bridge. Although for deeply different reasons, the…
ABSTRACT. The paper presents an analysis of an isotropic circular axisymmetric perforated plate loaded with concentrated force Pi applied in the geometric center of the plate using finite element software ANSYS. The test plate with…
This study presents an experimentally calibrated methodology to enhance the predictive accuracy of finite element simulations for Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) parts in Abaqus by replacing idealized filament geometry with a physically…
Safety of infrastructures represents one of the most significant concerns for governments and service providers to preserve people's well-being. One of the main ways to keep in safe facilities (buildings, bridges, railways, etc.) involves…
