In this work, a link between the averaged strain energy density (SED) approach and the peak stress method in the case of cracks subjected to mixed mode (I+II) loading has been investigated. Some closed-form expressions of the strain energy…

The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their…
Welded joints have always been critical elements of industrial mechanical structures, often being the source of failures related to the presence of fatigue loads. Although the academic world has presented advanced methodologies for the…
Brittle failure of components weakened by cracks or sharp and blunt V-notches is a topic of active and continuous research. It is attractive for all researchers who face the problem of fracture of materials under different loading…
In the Strain Energy Density (SED) approach for fatigue strength assessments of welded joints a well-defined control volume is considered. This volume surrounds the weld root or weld toe, both modelled like sharp (zero radius) V-notches…

The torsional fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of austenitic stainless steel, SUS316L, and carbon steel, SGV410, characterized by different notch root radii has been recently investigated by Tanaka. In that…
The purpose of this work is to validate the N-SIF, SED and ENS approaches for the fatigue design of austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Literature fatigue data for cruciform welded joints, originally expressed in terms of nominal…
A recent criterion based on the local strain energy density (SED) averaged over a given control volume is applied to well-documented experimental data taken from the literature, all related to steel welded joints of complex geometry. This…
The present contribution reviews a recently proposed method to rapidly estimate the averaged SED at the tip of short as well as long cracks under in-plane I+II and long cracks under out-of-plane I+III mixed mode loadings. Short cracks are…
The primary objective of this manuscript is studying the effect of T-stress term (T) on the crack propagation angle (CPA) and fracture toughness of in-plane mixed mode loading by utilizing a generalized form of minimum strain energy…
In the present paper, the approach based on the strain energy density (SED) averaged over a structural volume is reformulated to estimate the lifetime of notched components subjected to variable amplitude (VA) uniaxial fatigue loading. The…
In the last decades the necessity of implant devices is continuously increasing. The researchers have thus focused their attentions on the development of new biocompatible materials, in particular polymers. Among them, polyetheretherketone…
In this paper, high cycle fatigue failure behavior of Load-carrying Cruciform Welded Joints (LCWJ) is assessed using Strain Energy Density (SED) approach. Different analytical solutions are proposed and applied to illustrate the effects of…
In the present paper, the multiaxial fatigue life assessment of notched structural components is performed by employing a strain-based multiaxial fatigue criterion. Such a criterion, depending on the critical plane concept, is extended by…
The fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, has been analysed. To investigate the notch effect on the fatigue strength, pure bending, pure torsion and multiaxial bending-torsion fatigue…
This study has used the strain energy density (SED) approach to evaluate the stress intensity factor (SIF) of cracked cruciform welded joints in Hardox 450 steel. A microstructural analysis was made of Hardox 450 steel which is composed of…
The present paper addresses experimentally the high temperature fatigue of 40CrMoV13.9 steel and the effect of surface roughness on fatigue strength and crack initiation. The 40CrMoV13.9 steel is widely used in different engineering high…
