This paper investigates the fracture properties and notch effect of PUR materials with four different densities. The asymmetric semi-circular bend specimen was adapted to perform mixed mode fracture toughness tests. This semi-circular…
While a long stable crack propagation phase was observed during experiments of complex welded components, very conservative assessments of the fatigue life were achieved in the past. The difference was explained by the stress gradient…
The fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, has been analysed. To investigate the notch effect on the fatigue strength, pure bending, pure torsion and multiaxial bending-torsion fatigue…
In this research, the effect of thermally expandable microcapsules (TEMs) on mode I fracture toughness of structural adhesives were investigated. The single-edge-notch bending (SENB) test was used. Firstly, a standard toughness test was…

Selected methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses in elastic–plastic isotropic bodies subjected to multiaxial monotonic loading were compared. The methods use sets of equations where hypothetical notch tip elastic strains and…
Numerous components designed for use at elevated temperatures now exhibit multiaxial stress states as a result of geometric modification and material inhomogeneity. It is necessary to anticipate the creep rupture life of such components…
On the mode O existence in three-dimensional plates weakened by circular and elliptical holes under mode II loading It is known for long time that in a cracked plate subjected to anti-symmetric plane loading, the Poisson’s effect leads to…
Ultra-high-strength steels (with tensile strength higher than 980 MPa) are widely used in automobile manufacturing owing to their lightweight that contributes to fuel efficiency. The fatigue strength of ultra-high-strength steels with a…
Weld start and end points are fatigue failure sensitive locations. Their fatigue behaviour especially in thin sheet structures under multiaxial load conditions is not sufficiently explored so far. Therefore, a research project was…
The investigation of multiple crack interactions in fracture mechanics is important to predict the safety and reliability of structures. This paper introduces a numerical investigation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack…
The torsional fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of austenitic stainless steel, SUS316L, and carbon steel, SGV410, characterized by different notch root radii has been recently investigated by Tanaka. In that…
The present paper investigates the multiaxial fatigue strength of sharp V-notched components made of titanium grade 5 alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). Axisymmetric notched specimens have been tested under combined tension and torsion fatigue loadings…
The presence of a geometric discontinuity such as a crack or a notch can cause the failure of a structure during its use. Under various mechanical or thermal stresses, a high concentration of stresses can take place at the level of these…
Most research on the mode II fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) has intentionally avoided bridging fibers at pre-notch surfaces by using a through-thickness crack (TTC) that cuts the entire thickness, including fibers in…
Fatigue crack growth (FCG) is linked to irreversible and non-linear processes happening at the crack tip, which explains different problems observed in the use of da/dN-DK curves. The replacement of DK by non-linear crack tip parameters…
The present paper is concerned with the formulation of an elasto-plastic strain based approach suitable for assessing fatigue strength of notched components subjected to in-service variable amplitude cyclic loading. The hypothesis is…
Presented study is focused on the analysis of the dependence of the specific fracture energy value on the assumed work of fracture in threepoint bending tests. Specimens of different sizes and relative notch lengths are assumed in this…
The present paper investigates the accuracy of the Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM) in estimating multiaxial fatigue strength of aluminium friction stir (FS) welded joints. Having developed a bespoke joining technology…
This work presents a novel methodology for characterising fatigue cracks under biaxial conditions. The methodology uses high magnification Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique for measuring displacement and strain crack-tip fields. By…
For multiaxially-loaded parts several stress-based fatigue assessment concepts are applicable mostly taking uniaxial test results as basis. These approaches work well in case of proportional loading states, but on contrary, for…
The stress, strain rate and process zone with respect to the creep-crack growth are analyzed by employing damage-evolution equations. The damage models for the fracture of the process zone are represented using a stress and ductility based…
