The technology of energy piles for heat storage involves turning the concrete piles buried beneath the ground into a part of the ground-source heat pump system and burying the heat-transfer tubes in the foundation piles, which are regarded…
Uniform dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a key issue for utilization of their reinforcement potential in CNT-reinforced metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs). It was reported that CNT clusters often exist in MMNCs prepared by various…
In the total hip prosthesis, according to different positions of the patient, there are a variety of loads acting on femoral head which generate stress concentration in the cement called polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) and consequently in the…
In the present article, a review of the complete characterization in different aggressive media of a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy, performed by the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of the University of Bergamo, is presented. The light alloy has…
Manufacturing defects are inherent to any manufacturing process. However, in composite materials they might be unavoidable, e.g. ply waviness or even folds of plies are present in complex shaped parts during high pressure resin transfer…
The presence of a geometric discontinuity such as a crack or a notch can cause the failure of a structure during its use. Under various mechanical or thermal stresses, a high concentration of stresses can take place at the level of these…
Results of a double-shear single-dowel wood connection tested under monotonic quasi-static compression loading are presented and discussed in this paper. The wood used in this study was a pine wood, namely the Pinus pinaster species, which…
The Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, built in 1926, has been out of service since 1991 due to high corrosion levels and structural element impairment. A complete rehabilitation project was developed which included the replacement of the…
This paper presents a novel integral abutment design incorporating a composite dowel girder and H-shaped steel pile abutments to enhance load-bearing capacity and construction efficiency. Numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the…
This paper describes the results of the temperature monitoring of a frozen wall (FW) around the skip shaft of a potash mine under construction. The data on temperature measurements in control-thermal boreholes were used to parameterize the…
New biomedical supportive and lightweight structures require the creation of sustainable polymer composites of high strength and wear resistance. This research explores the use of alkali-treated pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) reinforced epoxy…
The analysis of fracture processes which led to shear failure in reinforced concrete beams without transverse reinforcement was performed on the basis of test results from the author’s own experimental investigation and numerical…
Overall structural integrity and load transfer between concrete and reinforcement enabling composite action relies on the bond between concrete and reinforcement. Bond strength determination of reinforced concrete is an essential task that…
This study investigates jute fibre reinforced epoxy composites fabricated using a controlled vacuum bag moulding process, with emphasis on establishing reliable structure property relationships relevant to sustainable engineering…
The repair technique has presented its effectiveness in the reduction of the stresses at the level of stresses concentration areas. The search for a patch and suitable adhesive for a good transfer of load has pushed researchers to develop…
