Thin rimmed and webbed gears are used in particular applications to reduce systems weight. This kind of gears need an accurate and fail safe design. As a matter of fact, a possible failure, due to bending fatigue, consists in crack…
This paper analyses the influence that the type of geometry used to obtain the stress/strain fields in a cylindrical contact has on fretting fatigue life predictions. In addition, this work considers the effect that the fatigue crack shape…
The size effect significantly influences the structural design of concrete elements, particularly when applying fracture mechanics principles. As structural dimensions increase, a significant outcome of the size effect is the decline in…
This paper focuses on the experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of the Alfas natural building stone. Two series of uniaxial compression tests and indirect tensile tests (Brazilian tests) were performed in order to…
While a long stable crack propagation phase was observed during experiments of complex welded components, very conservative assessments of the fatigue life were achieved in the past. The difference was explained by the stress gradient…
The blade-disc dovetail interface in an aero-engine compressor is characterized by a non-uniform pressure distribution which can be obtained by an equivalent flat with round edge-on-plate configuration. The contact tractions for a mating…
This paper studied the effects of specimen size and type on the real-mode-I fracture toughness (KIC )of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) specimens. Mode I KIC tests were performed using semicircular bend (SCB) and center-cracked…
In this paper, the attention is paid to investigation of the importance of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in selected fine-grained cement-based composites for the global fracture behaviour. This is a region of cement paste around…
Manufacturing defects are inherent to any manufacturing process. However, in composite materials they might be unavoidable, e.g. ply waviness or even folds of plies are present in complex shaped parts during high pressure resin transfer…
Crack propagation in gears is a problem related not only to the life of the components, but also to the concept of failsafe design. Fail safe design means to design a component in order that, if a failure occurs, this may cause a “safe…
This paper presents new analytical model of asymmetric mixed-mode bending (MMB) specimen of adhesively bonded pultruded GFRP joints. An easily applicable relationship for the calculation of the strain energy release rate of the asymmetric…
This paper describes a novel method to model the stress gradient effect in fretting-fatigue. The analysis of the mechanical fields in the proximity of the contact edges allows to extract nonlocal intensity factors that take into account…
This research is a numerical study of the effect of the constrained groove pressing (CGP) process and its impact on a thermoplastic polymer (polyamide PA 66). A simulation is performed using a finite element tool. The effect of the process…
This paper aims to analyze the multi-effects of the glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite patch to repair the inclined cracked 2420-T3 aluminum plate. Three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was used to study the effect of…
Abstract. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) depends on loading, geometry and also material properties. Since FCG is supposedly linked to crack tip plastic deformation, material’s yield stress, Y0, is an important parameter. The main objective…
The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of different geometries and sections on the mechanical properties of epoxy specimens. Five tensile tests were carried out on three types of series. The experimental results obtained were…
The Algerian seismic code assumes that the beam-column joints in monolithic reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are fully rigid. However, many experiments have proven the existence of relative rotations in these connections, and then the…
This study investigates the effects of complex (nonproportional) loading on plastic deformation in aluminum alloys (Al-6% Mg), with a focus on understanding surface morphology changes driven by the Portevin–Le Chatelier effect. Mechanical…
In the present work, the fracture performance of pre-cracked reinforced concrete beams was investigated numerically and experimentally. Experimental and numerical programs were designed to examine the effect of beam width, b, (120 and 250…
Structural failure assessment approaches take into account local parameters, specimen geometry, loading and material. In the case of welded joints, in addition to these parameters, consideration must be given to the effect of the…
A three-dimensional (3D) general upper-bound limit analysis procedure for the determination of the collapse load of out-of-plane loaded masonry walls with Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement strips is presented. The geometry of a…
The size and shape of individual grains, play an important role in the mechanical behavior of granular materials such as the strength and stability of railway ballast. The aim of this research is to study materials from which uniform…
This work deals with investigations of the stress field distribution around a steel anchor embedded in a concrete. Tensile loading - pulling force of the steel anchor is considered, which is very often connected to concrete cone failure.…
