The aim of this paper is to calculate how the surface crack front and the dimensionless compliance evolve in cracked cylindrical bars subjected to cyclic tension or bending with different initial crack geometries (crack depths and aspect…
Wafer bonding describes all technologies for joining two or more substrates directly or using certain intermediate layers. Current investigations are focused on so-called low temperature bonding as a special direct bonding technology. It…
There has been a trend recently to use specimen geometries for toughness measurement that are more representative of actual flaw geometries in service. A prominent example is the use of single-edge-notched tension specimens for assessment…
The fracture mechanical properties of silicate based materials are determined from various fracture mechanicals tests, e.g. three- or four- point bending test, wedge splitting test, modified compact tension test etc. For evaluation of the…
The compliance method was first applied to short rod specimens to determine the nonlinear fracture toughness of rock materials by ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics) in the 1980s. In this study, utilizing the techniques of the…
Crack closure concept has been widely used to explain different issues of fatigue crack propagation. However, different authors have questioned the relevance of crack closure and have proposed alternative concepts. The main objective here…
In this work it is proposed a methodology for the evaluation of plasticity-induced crack shielding from the analysis of the crack tip displacements fields measured by digital image correlation. This methodology is based on the evaluation…
Over the years several design philosophies to fatigue developed in order to combine structural safety and economy to manufacturing and operating aircraft process. The safe-life approach, which consists of designing and manufacturing a safe…
The premature contact of crack surfaces attributable to the near-tip plastic deformations under cyclic loading, which is commonly referred to as plasticity induced crack closure (PICC), has long been focused as supposedly controlling…
New experimental technique for a determination of the stress intensity factor (SIF) and T-stress values is developed and verified. The approach assumes combining the crack compliance method and optical interferometric measurements of local…
The novel destructive method is implemented for quantitative assessment of fatigue damage accumulation in the stress concentration zone accompanied by residual stress due to cold expansion of the through-thickness hole. Damage accumulation…
Biodegradable stents are attracting the attention of many researchers in biomedical and materials research fields since they can absolve their specific function for the expected period of time and then gradually disappear. This feature…
Experimental method for a characterization of high-cycle fatigue evolution of residual stress near cold-expanded hole is developed and implemented. The technique is based on simultaneous measurements of deformation response to narrow…
A truly-mixed approach for the analysis of viscoelastic structures and continua is presented. An additive decomposition of the stress state into a viscoelastic part and a purely elastic one is introduced along with an Hellinger-Reissner…
The influence of fiber orientation on the crack propagation behavior was studied with single edgenotched specimens which were cut from an injection-molded plate of short-fiber reinforced plastics of polyphenylenesulphide (PPS) reinforced…
Modified version of the crack compliance method is used for determination of stress intensity factor (SIF) related to narrow notches emanating from cold-expanded holes. These notches are inserted at different stages of low-cycle fatigue…
When the compliance with the European Code of some rail steel has to be verified, the need of carrying out the experimental activities in accordance with several testing Standards forces the operator both to solve the problems related to…
Explicit and simple expressions for root compliance coefficients, which can be used to define root rotations and root displacements at the crack tip cross section of orthotropic cracked beams, are derived under general self-equilibrated…
The research addresses evaluation of stress-strain state (SSS) in the “zygomatic bones–implants–denture base” system by varying the type and number of the zygomatic implants, as well as applying loads. The load magnitude was varied over a…
SS 316Ti is widely used in bellows industry and is a good candidate material for high temperature bellows in sodium cooled fast reactor (SFR) systems. Typical operating temperature experienced by SFR systems is around 823K. Design of…
In this article, the characteristic curves of microindentation measured on Cu99 were analyzed on the basis of the analytical expression proposed by Habibi et al. (J. Mater. Res, 2021, 36 (15): 3074-3085). It was found that the ratio of the…
