The aim of the paper was investigation crack initiation and fracture features developed during compression of Fe-based bulk metallic glass (BMG). These Fe-based BMG has received great attention as a new class of structural material due to…
A Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), in the course of a training flight, leaving the ground during the taxi to take off, went into an uncontrolled rolling to the right; consequently the helicopter gradually laid down on the right side. The…
This paper analyses how the microstructure of an eutectoid pearlitic steel affects its conventional mechanical properties (obtained by means of a standard tension test) and the associated micromechanisms of fracture. Results show how the…
Engineering components often contain notches, keyways or other stress concentration features. These features raise the stress state in the vicinity of their apex which can lead to unexpected failure of the component. The Theory of Critical…
This communication anticipates some results of a work in progress [1], addressed to explore the efficiency of the diffuse cohesive energy model for describing the phenomena of fracture and yielding. A first local model is partially…
Brittle failure of components weakened by cracks or sharp and blunt V-notches is a topic of active and continuous research. It is attractive for all researchers who face the problem of fracture of materials under different loading…
Natural stones like marbles are often employed as façade panels to externally cover buildings. These natural materials tend to exhibit a quasi-brittle nonlinear fracture behaviour which, conversely to concrete counterpart, has much less…
The microstructural origins of premature fatigue failures were investigated on a variety of forged components manufactured from AZ80 and ZK60 magnesium, both at the test specimen level and the full-scale component level. Both stress and…
The core of the present work concerns the analysis of the failure mode and the fracture process induced by the flexural load in Fibre Metal Laminates (FMLs). The influence of the connection layer placed between the composite ones and the…
The linear elastic analysis of homogeneous, isotropic cracked bodies is a Twentieth Century development. It was recognised that the crack tip stress field is a singularity, but it was not until the introduction of the essentially two…
A variant of neural network for processing with images is a convolutional neural network (CNN). This type of neural network receives input from an image and extracts features from the image while also providing learnable parameters to…
This is the second part of a short three-paper series, aiming to revisit some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Being the intermediate step of the analysis between infinite domains (discussed in Part-I) and finite…
In the current work 17-4PH Stainless Steel is deposited using SLM process. It is widely used to build structural parts appropriate for automotive, medical, and aerospace applications. The 17-4 PH SS samples were deposited using technical…
The aluminum alloy are extensively used in several industrial applications. Stir casting is one of the most frequently accepted methods. In the present investigation, how the microstructure, mechanical and wear mechanics of A357 alloy were…
Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) have been used during the last decades in the demolition of boulders and concrete structures as well as in open-surface and sub-surface rock excavation, as an alternative to the use of…
In this paper, the attention is paid to investigation of the importance of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in selected fine-grained cement-based composites for the global fracture behaviour. This is a region of cement paste around…
This paper discusses features of fatigue crack initiation and growth in aeronautical VT3-1 titanium alloy under pure torsion loading in gigacycle regime. Two materials: extruded and forged VT3-1 titanium alloys were studied. Torsion…
According to Gradient Mechanics (GM), stress fields have to be determined by directly incorporating into the stress analysis a length scale which that takes into account the material microstructural features. This peculiar modus operandi…
While it is well known that fatigue crack growth in metals that display confined slip, such as high strength aluminium alloys, develop crack paths that are responsive to the loading direction and the local microstructural orientation, it…
A recently proposed cohesive-zone model which effectively combines damage, friction and mechanical interlocking has been revisited and further validated by numerically simulating the pull-out test, from a concrete block, of a ribbed steel…
The influence of the joint line remnant (JLR) on tensile and fatigue fracture behaviour has been investigated in a friction stir welded Al-Mg-Sc alloy. JLR is one of the microstructural features formed in friction stir welds depending on…
Nowadays, an increasing number of oil and gas transmission pipes are constructed with high-strength low alloy steels (HSLA); however, many of these pipelines suffer from different types of hydrogen damages, such as hydrogen-induced…
This paper is concerned with the fracture of composite materials containing stress concentration features such as notches and holes. In particular, it addresses the question of the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) – a method…
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a new innovative technique that allows the direct fabrication of complex, individual, delicate and high-strength products, based on their 3D data. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is one of the AM processes that…
Our research described in this paper focused on fabricating and characterising polylactic acid (PLA) composites reinforced with randomly dispersed boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNNP). The integrated experimental analysis with the Finite…
The role of some geometrical characteristics of the notches machined in circular discs, in order to determine the mode-I fracture toughness of brittle materials, is discussed. The study is implemented both analytically and numerically.…
The phenomenon of ignition and explosive failure of specimens from high-entropy alloys (HEAs) of systems Ti-Zr-Hf-Ni-Cu, Ti-Zr-Hf-Ni-Cu-Co at quasi-static compression tests was found. It physical model is proposed. It is exhibited that the…
