Due to the abundance of engineering components subjected to complex multiaxial loading histories, being able to accurately estimate fatigue damage under multiaxial stress states is a fundamental step in many fatigue life analyses. In this…
This work extends the Multiaxial Racetrack Filter (MRF) to incorporate mean or maximum stress effects, adopting a filter amplitude that depends on the current stress level along the stress or strain path. In this way, a small stress or…
A fatigue test on a full scale panel with complex loading condition and geometry configuration has been carried out using a triaxial test machine. The demonstrator is made up of two skins which are linked by a transversal butt-joint…
Many engineering structures are exposed to non-proportional fatigue loading. However, at the critical location of crack initiation, often only one of the load sequences dominates – the individual load cases result in different crack…
Materials can be classified as shear or tensile sensitive, depending on the main fatigue microcrack initiation process under multiaxial loadings. The nature of the initiating microcrack can be evaluated from a stress scale factor (SSF)…
In this work, the orientation and propagation of cracks in fretting fatigue problems is analyzed numerically using the finite element method (FEM) and the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The analysis is performed by means of a 2D…
During a ferry flight, in a standard operation condition and at cruising level, a military cargo experienced a double hydraulic system failure due to a structural damage of the dual booster actuator. The booster actuator is the main…
The initial crack path is analysed in a fretting fatigue test with cylindrical contact, where there is a stress gradient and a multiaxial and non-proportional stress state. For this, a cylindrical pad is pressed, with a constant normal…
From experimental and theoretical investigations it is known that cracks are sensitive to geometry, e.g., to the inclination angle to the load. A small deviation of a crack from the normal direction to a tensile load causes mixed mode…
Several methods can be used to estimate elastoplastic (EP) notchtip stresses and strains from linear elastic calculations, providing EP stress and strain concentration factors. For uniaxial load histories, Neuber’s and Glinka’s rules are…
Structural components made of fibre-reinforced materials are frequently used in engineering applications. Fibre-reinforced composites are multiphase materials, and complex mechanical phenomena take place at limit conditions but also during…
A three-dimensional crack propagation simulation is performed by the Dual Boundary Element Method (DBEM). The Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) along the front of a semi elliptical crack, initiated from the external surface of a hollow axle…
Numerical analyses by finite element method and experimental tests are used to determine static and dynamic behaviour of railway vehicles. Experimental measurements are very time consuming and expensive, so they cannot be used at all…
An original simplified formula is proposed to estimate the load history caused by ballistic impacts characterized by the so-called bullet splash phenomenon, consisting in the complete bullet fragmentation with no penetration of the target.…
The aim of the present paper is to systematically investigate the accuracy of the so-called Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM) in estimating high-cycle fatigue strength of plain and notched engineering materials damaged by in-service…
Marine structures are particularly prone to action of waves, winds and currents with stochastically varying composition, intensities and directions. Therefore, resultant stresses may cause multiaxial fatigue in specific welded structural…
The quickly identify of fatigue limit of a mechanical component with good approximation is currently a significant practical problem not yet resolved in a satisfactory way. Generally, for a mechanical component, the fatigue strength…
The exact solution of the uncoupled thermoelasticity problem for a semi-infinite elastic layer with regard of its proper weight was constructed. The solving method is differ from the known previous and is based on reducing of Lame…
The investigation of multiple crack interactions in fracture mechanics is important to predict the safety and reliability of structures. This paper introduces a numerical investigation used to calculate the J-integral of the main crack…
In this paper thermal analysis was applied to determine the “Critical Stress” of concrete, different from its ultimate strength, able to produce the first damage in the structures under compressive loads. The Critical Stress can be thought…
For more than two decades, the construction technique using concrete filled steel tube (CFST) has been widespread throughout the world. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that the use of normal or high strength concrete, confined in a steel…
Unreinforced masonry is the most diffused construction material in the major part of historical centers in Europe. In a building subjected to earthquake forces the contribution of in-plane shear resistance of the masonry walls is a…
