Under the typical partial slip conditions under which fretting fatigue takes place, the amount of superficial damage is small. Therefore, the substantial reduction in fatigue life caused by fretting, when compared to plain fatigue, may…
This paper analyses the influence that the type of geometry used to obtain the stress/strain fields in a cylindrical contact has on fretting fatigue life predictions. In addition, this work considers the effect that the fatigue crack shape…
This work presents a methodology for life estimation of mechanical couplings subjected to fretting fatigue. In this approach, a stress-based multiaxial fatigue parameter is evaluated at a critical distance below the contact surface. The…
Williams’ solution may be used to characterize the corners of ‘complete’ fretting contacts. Here we look at the practicalities of conducting fretting tests using a range of different kinds of apparatus and the kind of results they can…
Fretting fatigue experiments aim to represent industrial problems and most of them endure variable loading. Being able to assess lifetime of assemblies, especially for low propagation rate conditions, is essential as experimental…
Metallic structural components, placed in contact with other bodies while experiencing vibrations in operating conditions, are susceptible to fretting, which can have a significant impact on their fatigue performance. Although extensive…
Many mechanical components such as, bearing housings, flexible couplings and spines or orthopedic devices are simultaneously subjected to a fretting wear and fatigue damage. For this reason, the combined study on a single model of wear…
In this work different strategies to estimate crack path for cylindrical contacts under fretting conditions are carried out. The main goal is to propose and to evaluate methodologies not only to estimate the direction of crack initiation…
The bending configuration of shrink-fitted connection fretting fatigue tests causes a fluctuation of the contact pressure and in turn a more favourable condition for shear, rather than tensile, crack initiation. According to the…
Three stainless steels – ASTM 304, 316 and 316L - used in hydrogen utilization equipment are under investigation at conditions of tension-compression, rotating-bending and fretting fatigue. Fatigue tests are carried out with hydrogen…
The initial crack path is analysed in a fretting fatigue test with cylindrical contact, where there is a stress gradient and a multiaxial and non-proportional stress state. For this, a cylindrical pad is pressed, with a constant normal…
In this work, the orientation and propagation of cracks in fretting fatigue problems is analyzed numerically using the finite element method (FEM) and the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The analysis is performed by means of a 2D…
The paper delivers a critical review of the research data on the crack initiation and crack growth patterns characteristic of the components of the spline-bolted joints between the propeller shaft and reducer shaft at An-24, An-26, and…
The very high cycle region of the S-N fatigue curve has been the subject of intensive research on the last years, with special focus on axial, bending, torsional and fretting fatigue tests. Very high cycle fatigue can be achieved using…
This paper describes a novel method to model the stress gradient effect in fretting-fatigue. The analysis of the mechanical fields in the proximity of the contact edges allows to extract nonlocal intensity factors that take into account…
Contacts with sharp edges subject to oscillatory loading are likely to nucleate cracks from the corners, if the loading is sufficiently severe. To a first approximation, the corners behave like notches, where the local elastic behaviour is…
Various input variables, including corrosion time, fretting force, stress, lubrication, heat-treating, and nano-particles, were evaluated by modeling of stress-controlled fatigue lifetimes in AlSi12CuNiMg aluminum alloy of the engine…
The objective of this work is to study the effects of contact parameters on the cracking parameters of a specimen and a pad assembly. These parameters have been studied and evaluated by the finite element method analysis in two dimensions…
Fatigue fracture surfaces of Al-based alloys with fatigue striations pattern and such wear debris pattern as spherical particles were investigated fractographically, on the bases of the OG’e spectroscopic analysis. The sequence of events…
The blade-disc dovetail interface in an aero-engine compressor is characterized by a non-uniform pressure distribution which can be obtained by an equivalent flat with round edge-on-plate configuration. The contact tractions for a mating…
A numerical study on the influence of contact parameters on fretting fatigue behavior is carried out by using a new method SFEM (Stretching Finite Element Method) is presented in this article. Several parameters are made to vary: geometric…
