Considerations are made for the fracture morphology and its evolution in relation to the brittle fracture along butt-weld, where crack path stability may play important roles in various aspects. Analyses of a kinked and curved crack are…
Due to the peculiar graphite elements shape, obtained by means of a chemical composition control (mainly small addition of elements like Mg, Ca or Ce), Ductile Cast Irons (DCIs) are able to offer the good castability of gray irons with the…
The torsional fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of austenitic stainless steel, SUS316L, and carbon steel, SGV410, characterized by different notch root radii has been recently investigated by Tanaka. In that…
AISI 304L stainless steel specimens have been tested in fatigue. The tests were axial, torsional and in-phase biaxial, all of them under load control and R=-1. The S-N curves were built following the ASTM E739 standard and the method of…
Cracks in cover of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structures significantly influence the ingress of deleterious species causing decrease in durability of these structures. The paper is focused on the effect of fracture process on two…
The fracture process zone (FPZ) was investigated on unnotched and notched beams with different notch depths. Three point bending tests were realized on plain concrete under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control. Crack growth was…
In stress analysis of cracked plates, alongside the stress intensity factor which quantifies the singular stress component perpendicular to the crack plane, the role played in crack growth by the constant term parallel to the crack plane…
The paper presents development of crack paths in aluminium alloy 2024. Fatigue tests were carried out for specimens with rectangular cross-section. The specimens were put to bending at controlled energy parameter amplitude and bending…
Numerical techniques have been widely applied in many recent works to investigate micro-scale behavior of materials. This work focuses on the analysis of strain localizations in a Nickel-based alloy, Haynes 230. Numerical models and…
When the compliance with the European Code of some rail steel has to be verified, the need of carrying out the experimental activities in accordance with several testing Standards forces the operator both to solve the problems related to…
The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their…
A Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), in the course of a training flight, leaving the ground during the taxi to take off, went into an uncontrolled rolling to the right; consequently the helicopter gradually laid down on the right side. The…
Metallic materials dissipate thermal energy when subjected to fatigue. Some of them, due a favorable combination of thermo-physical material properties, exhibit a significant temperature rise, which can be easily measured in-situ by means…
In Peru, research on cracking in concrete slabs has been limited, partly due to the perception that cracks do not pose an immediate problem. However, their cumulative effect over the long term can compromise structural durability…
Elber assumed that the actual driving force for fatigue crack growth (FCG) is the effective stress intensity factor ΔKeff. To verify this hypothesis, both DC(T) and C(T) specimens are cut from a 6351-T6 Al alloy circular bar with two…
This research investigates cracking in Reinforced Concrete Structures (RCS), particularly in bridge abutments, box girders, and culverts. Cracks often appear even after the concrete has reached its full strength. The current American…
Since the last two centuries, concrete has become the number one building material in the world. Therefore, we are interested in studying the mechanical behavior at failure of this material and calculate its toughness. In this paper, we…
This research studies and assesses the possibility of employing UHPFRC in exterior beam-column joints (BCJs). Eight specimens with various concrete material characteristics and steel reinforcing details are cast and examined under repeated…
High cycle fatigue tests were conducted for stainless steel AISI 304L. The geometry was a thin walled tube with a passing through hole. The tests were axial, torsional and in-phase axial-torsional, all of them under load control with R =…
The study presents and compares an application of two procedures to identify the crack tip location in PVC Sent samples under a uniaxial tensile test based on the image processing method. An IDS camera captures several photos of the PVC…
The work reviews some preliminary recent micromechanical tests aimed at the evaluation of the fracture toughness of silicon. Pre-cracked nano specimens and alternatively notched nano specimens combined with the theory of critical distances…
The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their…
Over the last two decades, piezoelectric actuators have emerged as a promising solution for structural repair. In this work, initially the stress intensity factor (SIF) estimation using the finite element (FE) approach at crack tips in…
