The infrared thermography is an attractive tool for studying the fatigue behavior of materials. Based on two theoretical models of fatigue damage indicators, this work studied the fatigue properties of the virgin Ti- 6Al-4V alloy.…
Marble slabs, typically used as façade panels to externally cover buildings, might permanently deform after a certain time of environmental exposure. This phenomenon, called bowing, is generally accompanied by a reduction of strength which…
Machining with a cutting edge with extensive damage or a fractured cutting edge significantly influences the machining performance. Therefore, investigations on tool wear behavior, their forms, and wear mechanisms will be very helpful in…
This paper reports results of fatigue tests of friction stir welded (FSW) aluminium tubes. Relatively small 38 mm diameter tubes were used and hence an automated FSW process using a retracting tool was designed for this project, as the…
Foams and porous materials with cellular structure have many interesting combinations of physical and mechanical properties coupled with low specific weight. By means of replication casting it is possible to manufacture foams from molten…
Plastics belong to the most complex and probably least understood engineering materials of today. Combining the best aspects of design, mechanical properties and manufacturing, the structural integrity of plastics is on par with aluminium…
Gradient Elasticity (GE) allows the stress analysis to be performed by taking into account the size of the dominant source of microstructural heterogeneity via a suitable length scale parameter. This is done by simply assuming that the…
The present work aims to model the fracture mechanical behavior of a high-strength low carbon steel, AISI 4130 operating in hydrogen contaminated environment. The study deals with the development of 2D finite element cohesive zone model…
In this work, the structural behavior of masonry buildings under flash flood actions is analyzed by using a novel 3D multilevel fluid/structure model. The proposed numerical framework consists of a macro-scale model based on the…
Single Point Incremental Forming was conducted on Aluminum1100 and Brass CuZn37 to form a hyperbolic truncated pyramid with varying wall angles until the fracture occurs. The formability of the specimens in terms of fracture depth and…
This study develops stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions for cladded WWER reactor pressure vessel nozzles subjected to pressurised thermal shock loading. Although finite element analysis is widely used for fracture assessment…
This work is motivated by the increasing interest towards the application of the “Projection-by-Projection” (PbP) spectral method in finite element (FE) analysis of components under multiaxial random loadings. To help users and engineers…
Designing tooling and cooling systems to prevent cutting tool damage is crucial while machining difficult-to-cut nickel alloys. This study investigates the machining effects during turning Inconel 718 using unitary aluminum oxide (Al2O3)…
Among the various severe plastic deformation techniques, Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) is a widely used method that introduces significant plastic deformation into a sample by forcing it through two intersecting channels, without…
Different structural and machine elements are used over the ages. These are subjected to various loads like static and dynamic load, temperature, corrosion etc. Due to the above-mentioned reasons, ageing of the structural elements occur.…
Infrastructure aging is an important problem nowadays, in particular for countries like Italy in which the main motorways were built 50 years ago. Huge budgets are necessary to keep infrastructure and bridges in service. In addition, the…
Limit equilibrium engineering analysis needs the incorporation of probabilistic approaches for the determination of soil strength statistical measures for deterministic and probabilistic analyses. For the commonly used Mohr–Coulomb…
The use of composite materials allows to have a great flexibility in terms of mechanical and physical characteristics. One of the most used composite structure in naval field, is the sandwich, which is composed by a stacking sequence of…
Machine learning has emerged as a powerful tool in various scientific fields for developing data-driven models, reducing the need for extensive physical testing. In this study, the fracture load was first predicted using Theory of Critical…
The study investigates the application of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in constructions of bridges. It highlights the main advantages of using FRP as a building material and points out its suitability for various structural…
This study presents an experimentally calibrated methodology to enhance the predictive accuracy of finite element simulations for Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) parts in Abaqus by replacing idealized filament geometry with a physically…
