Marble slabs, typically used as façade panels to externally cover buildings, might permanently deform after a certain time of environmental exposure. This phenomenon, called bowing, is generally accompanied by a reduction of strength which…
In the present paper, the well-known wedge splitting test (WST) is applied on specimens with different geometries (S= 150, 200, 300 mm) and variants of the specimens’ configurations. K-calibration (B1) and T-stress (B2) calibration curves…
Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, mechanical fragmentation, rock slope analysis, geophysics, earthquake mechanics and many other science and technology fields. Development of failure in…
This work aims at investigating the mechanisms activated during the extraction of titanium bars from a marble volume (pull-out phenomenon), used for rejoining fragmented marble structural members at the monuments of the Acropolis of…
The present paper aims to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on fracture behaviour of a natural stone: the red Verona marble. A wide variety of specimen types and methods to determine Mode I fracture toughness of natural stones are…
Marble conventional triaxial loading and unloading failure testing research is carried out to analyze the elastic strain energy and dissipated strain energy evolutionary characteristics of the marble deformation process. The study results…
A set of heterogeneous and homogeneous materials differing in their brittle and ductile characteristics (granite, marble, silica ceramics, silicon carbide, organic glass) were subjected to impact damaging by a falling weight. Multiple…
The present paper is devoted to an experimental study on the fracture behaviour of natural stones, commonly used as elements for building cladding, under both monotonic and cyclic loading, with particular emphasis to white Carrara marble.…
Natural stones like marbles are often employed as façade panels to externally cover buildings. These natural materials tend to exhibit a quasi-brittle nonlinear fracture behaviour which, conversely to concrete counterpart, has much less…
The efficiency of two modern sensing techniques, namely the “Acoustic Emissions” and the “Pressure Stimulated Currents” ones, when they are used as Continuous Structural Health Monitoring tools, is assessed experimentally. The protocol…
The damage development due to externally applied mechanical stress is a hot topic of interest involving several applications of everyday life, like civil engineering, monument restoration, construction evaluation and health monitoring.…
The temporal evolution of the electric activity generated in marble specimens under uniaxial compression is analyzed and quantified in terms of the Pressure Stimulated Voltage (Electric Potential) developed. The evolution of the electric…
The primary objective of this manuscript is studying the effect of T-stress term (T) on the crack propagation angle (CPA) and fracture toughness of in-plane mixed mode loading by utilizing a generalized form of minimum strain energy…
Taking advantage of the interevent time intervals, namely the time intervals between two successive acoustic events recorded during mechanical loading of structural elements, it is attempted to detect indices warning about upcoming…
Construction industry consumes a large amount of natural resources and energy and produces high amount of CO2 emissions and waste materials. For more sustainable construction industry, various waste materials are used as natural aggregates…
An experimental protocol is described including a series of uniaxial compression tests of three brittle materials (marble, mortar and glass). The Acoustic Emission (AE) technique and the Pressure Stimulated Currents (PSC) one are used…
The spatiotemporal evolution of damage in marble specimens under uniaxial compression is monitored using Pressure Stimulated Currents (PSCs) and Acoustic Emissions (AEs). The novelty of the study is the use of an integrated grid of…
Marble specimens are subjected to a specially designed stepwise loading protocol, in an attempt to detect fracture precursor phenomena taking advantage of Acoustic Emission (AE) data. The analysis is carried out in terms of the number of…
Natural stone is a material that presents durableness over time and high aesthetic characteristic, but it is brittle and its tensile strength is significantly lower than compressive one: these peculiarities must be taken into account for…
This paper concerns the results of research into the influence of the composition of rock inclusions on the fracture response of cement-based composite specimens. Specially designed specimens of the nominal dimensions 40 × 40 × 160 mm with…
