The crack growth behavior of the aluminum alloy 6061 T651 was investigated using cruciform specimens with a measurement area of 120 x 120 x 2 mm3 with two center crack configurations of the starting notch parallel to one of the loading…
Crack closure concept has been widely used to explain different issues of fatigue crack propagation. However, different authors have questioned the relevance of crack closure and have proposed alternative concepts. The main objective here…
It is generally accepted that fatigue crack growth is retarded after an overload, which has been explained either by plasticity-induced crack closure or near-tip residual stress. However, any interpretation of overload effect is…
The CJP model of crack tip stresses is a modified version of the Williams crack tip stress field which takes account of simplified stress distributions that arise from the presence of a zone of plastic deformation associated with the crack…
The understanding of shear-mode crack growth mechanisms and crack branching phenomena is of great interest for a variety of practical engineering situations. Despite this fact, relatively little research is available regarding these…
While it is well known that fatigue crack growth in metals that display confined slip, such as high strength aluminium alloys, develop crack paths that are responsive to the loading direction and the local microstructural orientation, it…
Fully automatic fatigue crack growth simulation system is developed using S-version FEM (SFEM). This system is extended to fracture in heterogeneous material. In the heterogeneous material, crack tip stress field becomes mixed mode…
Crack closure influences fatigue crack growth rate and must be included in the design of components. Plasticity induced crack closure is intimately linked with the crack tip plastic deformation, which becomes residual as the crack…
The premature contact of crack surfaces attributable to the near-tip plastic deformations under cyclic loading, which is commonly referred to as plasticity induced crack closure (PICC), has long been focused as supposedly controlling…
A series of fatigue experiments on thin-walled tubes under tension and torsion, the experimental results – crack path and crack growth life – are measured and compared. It is observed that the cracks follow a curvature from a tensile to a…
In the current work an experimental study of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) is performed to evaluate the ability of this parameter to characterise fatigue crack growth. A methodology is developed to measure and to analyse the…
Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) having a bimodal “harmonic structure”, which consists of coarsegrained structure surrounded by a network structure of fine grains, was fabricated by mechanical milling (MM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) to…
For various configurations examined in a series of fatigue experiments on thin-walled tubes under tension and torsion, the experimental results – crack path, crack growth life, near crack tip deformations, and crack closure – are measured…
The paper analyses previously reported work, which uses digital image correlation to measure fatigue crack closure. As well as determining crack opening loads, the information on crack shape may be used to estimate the stress intensity…
Fatigue crack growth (FCG) is linked to irreversible and non-linear processes happening at the crack tip, which explains different problems observed in the use of da/dN-DK curves. The replacement of DK by non-linear crack tip parameters…
This work raises some new questions about the validity of blindly assuming that Elber’s effective stress intensity factor is the actual fatigue crack driving force, and that as so it can be used to explain all load sequence effects on…
The S-version Finite Element Method (FEM) is known as a global-local superimposed approach that consists of two separate meshes referred to as global and local cracks. The relationship between the energy release rate and the Stress…
An experimental campaign was developed to study fatigue crack growth in Haynes 230, a Ni-based superalloy. The effects of crack closure were investigated with digital image correlation, by applying two different approaches. Initially, full…
In the last two decades, visual image techniques such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) enabled to experimentally determine the crack tip displacement and strain fields at small scales. The displacements are tracked during loading, and…
The advances in the use of thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) for fracture mechanics assessment are reviewed. The development of techniques to determine stress intensity factor is presented followed by the application of these techniques…
In the past two decades, crack-tip mechanics has been increasingly studied with full-field techniques. Within these techniques, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has been most widely used due to its many advantages, to extract important…
The influence of forging conditions on the propagation of physically small fatigue cracks has been studied for two high strength steels. Two surface conditions were produced after the forging process. The subsurface microstructure of the…
Mixed mode crack propagation analysis has been more accessible with the development of new numerical tools, allowing to evaluate the influence of non-mode I loadings in the crack path and in the growth rate. The aim of this work is to…
In this research, the effect of thermally expandable microcapsules (TEMs) on mode I fracture toughness of structural adhesives were investigated. The single-edge-notch bending (SENB) test was used. Firstly, a standard toughness test was…
The use of miniaturized specimen testing methods is a promising way to solve the problem of limited materials in RPV monitoring programs. The use of miniature specimens allows the evaluation of fracture toughness from other specimen…
A stereo microscope coupled to a 3-D Digital Image Correlation system is used to measure strain ranges on the cyclic plastic zone ahead of a fatigue crack-tip. First, a very refined speckle pattern is applied on the surface of a…
The compliance method was first applied to short rod specimens to determine the nonlinear fracture toughness of rock materials by ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics) in the 1980s. In this study, utilizing the techniques of the…
Abstract. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) depends on loading, geometry and also material properties. Since FCG is supposedly linked to crack tip plastic deformation, material’s yield stress, Y0, is an important parameter. The main objective…
The present authors have previously proposed a novel ‘plastic inclusion’ approach for dealing with the local plasticity which occurs at the tip of a growing fatigue crack. This meso-scale model provides a modified set of crack tip stress…
