According to Gradient Mechanics (GM), stress fields have to be determined by directly incorporating into the stress analysis a length scale which that takes into account the material microstructural features. This peculiar modus operandi…
In this paper the process of dynamic indentation, causing deformation and fracture of alumina ceramics, is investigated. The dynamic indentation experiments were carried out on the original setup based on the split Hopkinson bar technique.…
During the last years many researchers put so much effort to design layered structures combining different materials in order to improve low fracture toughness and mechanical reliability of the ceramics. It has been proven, that an…
A set of heterogeneous and homogeneous materials differing in their brittle and ductile characteristics (granite, marble, silica ceramics, silicon carbide, organic glass) were subjected to impact damaging by a falling weight. Multiple…
Mechanisms of structural relaxation are linked with the metastability of nonequilibrium potential of solid with defects and the generation of collective modes of defects responsible for the plastic strain and damage localization. It is…
An approach to multiscale description of deformation and fracture of brittle porous materials on the basis of movable cellular automaton method was proposed. The material characterized by pore size distribution function having two maxima…
The effect of load intensity and porous material structure on the fragmentation statistics of ZrO2(MgO)-based ceramics is studied. Cylindrical samples were fragmented under dynamic compression. Experimental data processing showed that the…
Layered ceramic materials (also referred to as “ceramic laminates”) are becoming one of the most promising areas of materials technology aiming to improve the brittle behavior of bulk ceramics. The utilization of tailored compressive…
Experimental loading and FEM simulation-based approach at macroscale are utilized to investigate the failure mechanisms of Al2O3 ceramics. Experimental characterization of microstructure is carried out using SEM. Recently the microscale…
Elastic fracture mechanics commonly defines the fracture resistance of brittle materials within an idealised picture of planar and traction free cracks. An efficient approach to describe the interface conditions in real cracks, such as…
In several industrial applications, plastic, composites and ceramics replace a number of metallic structures such as copper, aluminum and steel. Most recently installed piping water and gas systems in the world are made of thermoplastic…
In the current studies an investigations were made to know the effect of 63 micron sized B4C particles addition on the mechanical and wear behavior of aerospace alloy Al2618 metal composites. Al2618 alloy with different weight percentages…
Nanostructured adhesives may be defined as those materials whose elements imbedded in an epoxy matrix have dimensions in the 1 to 100 nm range. One of the most interesting aspects of ceramic nanoparticles is that their mechanical…
