Due to the abundance of engineering components subjected to complex multiaxial loading histories, being able to accurately estimate fatigue damage under multiaxial stress states is a fundamental step in many fatigue life analyses. In this…
Multiaxial fatigue failure criteria are formulated in time and frequency domain. The number of frequency domain criteria is rather small and the most popular one is the equivalent von Mises stress criterion. This criterion was elaborated…
This work presents a new state update algorithm for small-strain associative elastic-plastic constitutive models, treating in a unified manner a wide class of deviatoric yield functions with linear or nonlinear strain-hardening. The…
Components and structures are designed based in their material’s mechanical properties such as Young's modulus or yield stress among others. Often those properties are obtained under monotonic mechanical tests but rarely under cyclic ones.…
This paper presents a system of plastic flow equations which uses and generalizes to the multiaxial case a number of concepts commonly employed in the so-called Local Strain Approach to low cycle fatigue. Everything is built upon the idea…
The influence of environmental medias on crack propagation of a structural steel at high and very high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) regimes is investigated based on the fatigue tests performed in air, water and 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution. Crack…
Ductility in metals includes the material’s capability to tolerate plastic deformations before partial or total degradation of its mechanical properties. Modelling this parameter is important in structure and component design because it…
In this work we designed and manufactured a novel magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper with internal pressure control. Previous authors’ works showed that the yield stress ?B of MR fluids depends both on the magnetic field intensity and on…
Tensile and stress controlled fatigue tests were performed to investigate the influence of forging at a temperature of 400°C at different rates, on the performance of extruded AZ31B magnesium alloy. The obtained microstructural analysis…
The current work presents a novel methodology for the experimental quantification of the crack tip plastic zone during fatigue crack growth. This methodology is based on the application of yield criteria to estimate the area and the shape…
The deformation behaviour and fracture mechanisms of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide 6 (PA 6) are investigated experimentally under different stress states and at different crosshead speeds of 1, 20 and…
SS 316Ti is widely used in bellows industry and is a good candidate material for high temperature bellows in sodium cooled fast reactor (SFR) systems. Typical operating temperature experienced by SFR systems is around 823K. Design of…
Abstract. Fatigue crack growth (FCG) depends on loading, geometry and also material properties. Since FCG is supposedly linked to crack tip plastic deformation, material’s yield stress, Y0, is an important parameter. The main objective…
Pipelines are considered as a major tool to transport hydrocarbons due to its important role in transporting fluids taking into account the operating conditions. Despite the importance of the elbow which considered as a critical part in…
The minimum plastic zone radius (MPZR) criterion is one of the recent criterions to estimate crack initiation direction under mixed mode loading. The MPZR theory is based on the theoretical computations of plastic zone size (PZS). In this…
This investigation revisits biaxial fatigue experiments carried out with the nickel-based superalloy termed Waspaloy. Recently, yield criteria extended to multiaxial fatigue and stress based approaches were analysed and their performance…
In this work, the mechanical properties of Waspaloy superalloy have been evaluated in case of welded repaired material and compared to base material. Test program considered flat specimens on base and TIG welded material subjected to…
The plastic zone is theoretically and numerically analyzed for various combinations of the nonsingular terms xx T to zz T ratios in connection with specimen thickness under mode I loading. The plastic zone size distribution is based on the…
Various failure modes induce localized internal damage and stress concentration sites in power plant components, causing additional plasticity that degrades material strength. Effect on such localized plasticity on components durability…
The paper deals with the investigation of the temporal instabilities and spatial localization due to the Lüders behavior and the Portevin–Le Chatelier effect in the carbon steel C1010 and the aluminummagnesium alloy AA5052, which manifest…
Cold expansion by hardening is a common process used in the aerospace industry to extend the fatigue lifetime of assembly holes, through a field of high compressive tangential residual stresses. The understanding and the control of the…
Additive manufacturing is extensively used for the production of complex-shaped parts from metals and polymers. Because of the influence of various physical factors, the structure of materials processed under different processing…
To date, several applications of magnetorheological (MR) fluids are present in the industrial world, nonetheless system requirements often needs better material properties. In technical literature a previous work shows that MR fluids…
