Orthotropic decks were applied to the long span bridges after World War II due to several advantages, such as light weight, high strength, few deck joints, durability, rapid construction, life-cycle economy. The fatigue problem of…
The influence of the non-proportional loadings on the fatigue life depends on the material ductility. Ductile materials react with a shortening of lifetime compared to proportional loading conditions. For a semiductile material there is…
The structures of the hydraulic excavator and the crane have numerous one-sided welded joints. However, attachments with box like structures are difficult to weld at both sides. Therefore, high accurate evaluation method is needed. In this…

Ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) is a remarkable post-weld technique applying mechanical impacts in combination with ultrasound into the welded joints. In the present work, a 3D simulation method including welding simulation, numerical…
Marine structures are particularly prone to action of waves, winds and currents with stochastically varying composition, intensities and directions. Therefore, resultant stresses may cause multiaxial fatigue in specific welded structural…
The present paper investigates the accuracy of the Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM) in estimating multiaxial fatigue strength of aluminium friction stir (FS) welded joints. Having developed a bespoke joining technology…
S-N curve fatigue samples of titanium alloy welded joints have such a comparatively significant scatter, that results in the issue that the fatigue life prediction accuracy is not optimal. In this work, the titanium alloy welded joints'…
Three-point bending fatigue test of 5083 and 5A06 aluminum alloy T-welded joints is carried out, and the fatigue life of the specimens with different influencing factors are obtained. Finite element model of the T-welded joint is…
This paper presents results of experimental examinations of stress concentration influence to fatigue life of butt welded joints with K-groove, produced from the most frequently used structural steel S355J2+N. One group of experiments…
In the Strain Energy Density (SED) approach for fatigue strength assessments of welded joints a well-defined control volume is considered. This volume surrounds the weld root or weld toe, both modelled like sharp (zero radius) V-notches…
The purpose of this work is to validate the N-SIF, SED and ENS approaches for the fatigue design of austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Literature fatigue data for cruciform welded joints, originally expressed in terms of nominal…
Fatigue life tests under constant and variable amplitude loadings were performed on the tube-tube thin-walled welded specimens made of magnesium (AZ31 and AZ61) alloys. The tests included pure axial, pure torsional and combined in-phase…
Fatigue design of welded structures is primarily based on a nominal stress; hot spot stress methods or local approaches each having several limitations when coupled with finite element modeling. An alternative recent structural stress…
Brazing is a widely employed joining technique for aluminium components due to its cost-effectiveness and compatibility with complex geometries. However, the structural integrity of brazed joints under cyclic loading remains a scarcely…
Weld start and end points are fatigue failure sensitive locations. Their fatigue behaviour especially in thin sheet structures under multiaxial load conditions is not sufficiently explored so far. Therefore, a research project was…
The aim of this research activity was to study the fatigue behavior of laser welded joints of titanium alloy, in which the welding was performed using a laser source and in the absence of filler material, by means of unconventional full…
Structural failure assessment approaches take into account local parameters, specimen geometry, loading and material. In the case of welded joints, in addition to these parameters, consideration must be given to the effect of the…
Fatigue takes a place more and more important in the design of structures, it remains a key point in the mechanical dimensioning of structures. The Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process is regarded today as the most promising alternative to…
