The aim of this work is a review of scientific results in the literature, related to the application of thermographic techniques to composite materials. Thermography is the analysis of the surface temperature of a body by infrared rays…
Under cyclic load, local fatigue damage will occur in the metal damper widely used in the shear wall. This will deteriorate the stiffness of damper and weaken the hysteresis behaviour. The present paper proposed a new and easy method to…
Nowadays most industrial realities undergo a strong push to improve cost-effectiveness, productivity and quality of manufactured products. In particular we focussed our attention in the area of design of plastic structural components…
This paper aims to illustrate the use of infrared thermography as a non-destructive and non-contact technique to observe the phenomenological manifestation of damage in granite under unconfined compression. It allows records and…
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are advanced material systems used to enhance performance and in-service life of components operated at high temperatures in gas turbines and other power-generation devices. Because of complexity, numerical…
In several industrial applications, plastic, composites and ceramics replace a number of metallic structures such as copper, aluminum and steel. Most recently installed piping water and gas systems in the world are made of thermoplastic…
The purpose of this study was to explore the changes of mechanical and physical properties of granite under different thermal loading effects. Uniaxial compression experiments studying the rules of the influence of temperature load on…
An experimental technique is presented to evaluate mechanical and thermal load-induced microstructural damage, based on the Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) principle, by which certain analytical potentialities of Scanning Electron…
Laboratory tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of thermal damage on diorite under microwave irradiation. The sample rocks were heated to high temperature range of 300 to 800 ℃ in a single-mode microwave furnace. The…
The presence of a geometric discontinuity such as a crack or a notch can cause the failure of a structure during its use. Under various mechanical or thermal stresses, a high concentration of stresses can take place at the level of these…
The work reports the observed fatigue damage of C45 steel specimens tested in a previous work under multiaxial loading conditions and its relationship with the thermal energy dissipation which has been used in the last decades to estimate…
The Static Thermographic Method (STM) involves analyzing the thermal behavior of a specimen subjected to a quasi-static tensile test. The temperature trend, measured by an infrared camera, follows three phases where the first and second…
In this paper thermal analysis was applied to determine the “Critical Stress” of concrete, different from its ultimate strength, able to produce the first damage in the structures under compressive loads. The Critical Stress can be thought…
Research on determining the lifetime of an expansion bellows designed to compensate the difference in expansion between the shell and the tubes in a fixed tube sheet heat exchanger has never ceased because of its Importance in a heat…
Metallic materials dissipate thermal energy when subjected to fatigue. Some of them, due a favorable combination of thermo-physical material properties, exhibit a significant temperature rise, which can be easily measured in-situ by means…
During a ferry flight, in a standard operation condition and at cruising level, a military cargo experienced a double hydraulic system failure due to a structural damage of the dual booster actuator. The booster actuator is the main…
Fatigue lifetime assessment is essential in the design of structures. Under-estimated predictions may result in unnecessary in service inspections. Conversely, over-estimated predictions may have serious consequences on the integrity of…
Designing tooling and cooling systems to prevent cutting tool damage is crucial while machining difficult-to-cut nickel alloys. This study investigates the machining effects during turning Inconel 718 using unitary aluminum oxide (Al2O3)…
A critical problem in the application of metal matrix composites is the presence of high residual thermal stresses induced during the development process. These thermally induced stresses are generally detrimental to the service life of…
New developments in thermal spraying processes may offer higher-quality alternatives to hard chrome plating and possibilities for hard chrome plating in a range of coating applications. These include spraying with high-velocity air fuel…
In structural engineering, composite patch repairs are widely used to address cracked structures. However, their behavior under thermo-mechanical loading remains complex and less understood. This study examines the repair of a…
In the last years, a large amount of fatigue test results from plain and bluntly notched specimens made of AISI 304L stainless steel were synthetized in a single scatter band by adopting the specific heat loss per cycle (Q) as a damage…
The present paper is devoted to an experimental study on the fracture behaviour of natural stones, commonly used as elements for building cladding, under both monotonic and cyclic loading, with particular emphasis to white Carrara marble.…
