It is generally accepted that fatigue crack growth is retarded after an overload, which has been explained either by plasticity-induced crack closure or near-tip residual stress. However, any interpretation of overload effect is…
Residual stresses occur in many manufactured structures and components. Great number of investigations have been carried out to study this phenomenon. Over the years, different techniques have been developed to measure residual stresses…
Cutting processes affect the material to a deeper or shallower attached-to-the-cut zone. Its microstructure, its hardness and mechanical properties are changed. Also the cutting process introduces surface roughness and residual stresses.…
Additively manufactured materials possess significant heterogeneities and anisotropies of stiffness and strength properties between the growth and transverse directions. Residual stresses induced by the fabrication and processing stages…
The determination of residual stresses by combining blind hole drilling and optical interferometric measurement of relief deformation is re-visited to evaluate its applicability to aerospace structures. The experimental methodology…
The evolution of crack-tip strain fields in a thin (plane stress) compact tension sample following an overload (OL) event has been studied using two different experimental techniques. Surface behaviour has been characterised by Digital…
Fatigue design routines and computer codes must use some damage accumulation rule to deal with variable amplitude loadings (VAL), usually Palmgren-Miner (or Miner’s) linear rule for lack of a clearly better option. Nevertheless, fatigue…
Many numerical methods are carried out to study the nonlinear failure behaviors of the rock; however, the numerical simulation methods for the failed rock are still in the research stage. This paper establishes the damage constitutive…
The paper considers a pro-bionic lattice shell (PBLS) for civil aviation structures and the problem of getting the parameters of a local low-velocity impact taking the value of residual strain by fiber optic sensors (FOS) installed in…
During the last years many researchers put so much effort to design layered structures combining different materials in order to improve low fracture toughness and mechanical reliability of the ceramics. It has been proven, that an…
Crack closure influences fatigue crack growth rate and must be included in the design of components. Plasticity induced crack closure is intimately linked with the crack tip plastic deformation, which becomes residual as the crack…
In this paper, numerical investigation was carried out to quantify the effect of the cold expansion on fatigue crack initiation in Aluminium alloy. The improvement in fatigue initiation life of specimen after the cold expansion process was…
A method for assessing the degradation of mechanical properties of neat polyetheretherketone and its laminated composite reinforced with unidirectional carbon fibers is proposed. It is based on the calculation of the maximum and minimum…
This paper presents an advanced optimization methodology for truss structures, addressing both elasto-plastic design cases—where plastic deformations are controlled within predefined limits—and purely elastic scenarios, in which inelastic…
Fatigue crack growth (FCG) is linked to irreversible and non-linear processes happening at the crack tip, which explains different problems observed in the use of da/dN-DK curves. The replacement of DK by non-linear crack tip parameters…
This work is devoted to an experimental investigation of fatigue behavior of pultruded fiberglass tubes under uniaxial tension, compression and torsion. Static tests were carried out; a presence of postcritical deformation stage during…
