The behavior of short cracks that depart from elastoplastic notch tips is modeled to estimate the stresses required to initiate and to propagate cracks in notched structural components, and to evaluate the size of tolerable crack-like…
Selected methods for calculating notch tip strains and stresses in elastic–plastic isotropic bodies subjected to multiaxial monotonic loading were compared. The methods use sets of equations where hypothetical notch tip elastic strains and…
Several methods can be used to estimate elastoplastic (EP) notchtip stresses and strains from linear elastic calculations, providing EP stress and strain concentration factors. For uniaxial load histories, Neuber’s and Glinka’s rules are…
The CJP model of crack tip stresses is a modified version of the Williams crack tip stress field which takes account of simplified stress distributions that arise from the presence of a zone of plastic deformation associated with the crack…
Gradient Elasticity (GE) allows the stress analysis to be performed by taking into account the size of the dominant source of microstructural heterogeneity via a suitable length scale parameter. This is done by simply assuming that the…
The role of some geometrical characteristics of the notches machined in circular discs, in order to determine the mode-I fracture toughness of brittle materials, is discussed. The study is implemented both analytically and numerically.…
The present paper investigates the accuracy of the Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM) in estimating multiaxial fatigue strength of aluminium friction stir (FS) welded joints. Having developed a bespoke joining technology…
The presence of a geometric discontinuity such as a crack or a notch can cause the failure of a structure during its use. Under various mechanical or thermal stresses, a high concentration of stresses can take place at the level of these…
Weld start and end points are fatigue failure sensitive locations. Their fatigue behaviour especially in thin sheet structures under multiaxial load conditions is not sufficiently explored so far. Therefore, a research project was…
In this investigation, fatigue criterion was established to predict crack-initiation at the tip of a notch in aged hardening aluminum alloy. This criterion was used to predict the residual lifetime in aeronautical structures using concept…
The present paper is concerned with the formulation of an elasto-plastic strain based approach suitable for assessing fatigue strength of notched components subjected to in-service variable amplitude cyclic loading. The hypothesis is…
Many engineering structures are exposed to non-proportional fatigue loading. However, at the critical location of crack initiation, often only one of the load sequences dominates – the individual load cases result in different crack…
For multiaxially-loaded parts several stress-based fatigue assessment concepts are applicable mostly taking uniaxial test results as basis. These approaches work well in case of proportional loading states, but on contrary, for…
The stress, strain rate and process zone with respect to the creep-crack growth are analyzed by employing damage-evolution equations. The damage models for the fracture of the process zone are represented using a stress and ductility based…
Experimental method for a characterization of high-cycle fatigue evolution of residual stress near cold-expanded hole is developed and implemented. The technique is based on simultaneous measurements of deformation response to narrow…
This is the second part of a short three-paper series, aiming to revisit some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Being the intermediate step of the analysis between infinite domains (discussed in Part-I) and finite…
The deformation behaviour and fracture mechanisms of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide 6 (PA 6) are investigated experimentally under different stress states and at different crosshead speeds of 1, 20 and…
