This work deals with the notch sensitivity of sharp notches under multi-axial fatigue loading. The main discussion concerns the differences in notch sensitivity at high cycle fatigue regime, between tensile, torsional and combined loading.…
Semi–empirical notch sensitivity factors q have been widely used to properly account for notch effects in fatigue design for a long time. However, the intrinsically empirical nature of this old concept can be avoided by modeling it using…
The behavior of short cracks that depart from elastoplastic notch tips is modeled to estimate the stresses required to initiate and to propagate cracks in notched structural components, and to evaluate the size of tolerable crack-like…
The presence of notches and other stress concentrations in turbine blades and other notch hydraulic components is a current problem in engineering. It causes a reduction of endurance limit of material. In that sense, specimens of the ASTM…
Ultra-high-strength steels (with tensile strength higher than 980 MPa) are widely used in automobile manufacturing owing to their lightweight that contributes to fuel efficiency. The fatigue strength of ultra-high-strength steels with a…
To meet the design requirements, different types of defects are often machined on the surface of fatigue components. Local stress concentration formed at the notch accelerate the initiation of fatigue crack, therefore greatly shorten the…
Onyx ® is a new material composed of Polyamide 6 reinforced with short carbon fiber, used in the novel additive manufacturing composites technique. This paper aims to present the axial fatigue performance of this material with and without…
A series of strain-controlled multiaxial low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests under proportional and non-proportional loading conditions have been conducted on notched specimens. Cylindrical bars of Al 6061 aluminum alloy and AISI 316L stainless…
The present paper investigates the multiaxial fatigue strength of sharp V-notched components made of titanium grade 5 alloy (Ti-6Al-4V). Axisymmetric notched specimens have been tested under combined tension and torsion fatigue loadings…
As often done in design practice, the Wöhler curve of a specimen, in the absence of more direct information, can be crudely retrieved by interpolating with a power-law curve between static strength at a given conventional low number of…
For multiaxially-loaded parts several stress-based fatigue assessment concepts are applicable mostly taking uniaxial test results as basis. These approaches work well in case of proportional loading states, but on contrary, for…
Presently, Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are extensively utilised in several industrial sectors, and the modelling of their mechanical behaviour is consistently advancing. Most studies investigate the impact of layers on the…
