In this research, the effect of thermally expandable microcapsules (TEMs) on mode I fracture toughness of structural adhesives were investigated. The single-edge-notch bending (SENB) test was used. Firstly, a standard toughness test was…
The focus of manufacturing is more and more on innovative and application-oriented products considering lightweight construction. Hence, especially functional graded materials come to the fore. Due to the application-matched functional…
This paper deals with the influence of the cold drawing process on the fracture behaviour of pearlitic steels. To this end, fracture tests under axial loading were performed on steel wires with different drawing degree (from a hot rolled…
The present paper aims to assess the effect of freeze/thaw cycles on fracture behaviour of a natural stone: the red Verona marble. A wide variety of specimen types and methods to determine Mode I fracture toughness of natural stones are…
This paper investigates the fracture properties and notch effect of PUR materials with four different densities. The asymmetric semi-circular bend specimen was adapted to perform mixed mode fracture toughness tests. This semi-circular…
In this paper, the effect of integration of natural fibers in UD carbon fiber is studied. The integration of natural fibers in carbon fiber is made via intra fiber hybridization. Natural fiber hybrid composite samples were prepared for…
Most research on the mode II fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) has intentionally avoided bridging fibers at pre-notch surfaces by using a through-thickness crack (TTC) that cuts the entire thickness, including fibers in…
A present study reveals the influence of nano Al2O3 and ZrO2 reinforcements on the fracture toughness of Hybrid Metal matrix Composites (HMMCs) made of Al6061 alloy. Composites are synthesized by varying weight fraction of alumina and…
Durability and sustainability of structures made from concrete like materials is getting more into an interest of civil engineers. Structures are subjected not only to uniaxial load, this means if there is a crack inside the load could be…
This paper studied the effects of specimen size and type on the real-mode-I fracture toughness (KIC )of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) specimens. Mode I KIC tests were performed using semicircular bend (SCB) and center-cracked…
Wafer bonding describes all technologies for joining two or more substrates directly or using certain intermediate layers. Current investigations are focused on so-called low temperature bonding as a special direct bonding technology. It…
Crack growth and brittle fracture is one of the major failure modes in bone materials and therefore understanding the fracture behavior and affecting parameters on the crack growth resistance of bone is necessary for biomechanics…
In the present work, the fracture performance of pre-cracked reinforced concrete beams was investigated numerically and experimentally. Experimental and numerical programs were designed to examine the effect of beam width, b, (120 and 250…
Adhesive bonding is the elective joining system between Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) parts because, with respect to fastening, it allows a large connection area, no additional parts (hence weight saving) and no need to drill…
Low temperature fracture toughness and fracture energy are two important measures that could be used to investigate the impacts of using asphalt modifiers on the performance of asphalt pavements in cold regions. The aim of this research…
In mixed-mode conditions, the competing contribution of the different stress intensity factors predicts fracture initiation load as well as crack propagation direction. Commonly, mixed-mode fracture resistance is based on the assumption of…
This paper describes an experimental study developed to characterize the mode I and mode II fracture toughness of carbon/epoxy woven composites, using DCB and ENF tests, respectively. The laminates were manufactured using an epoxy resin…
Particleboard (PB) are wood-based composites with fine wood fibers bound together by a small amount of polymeric adhesive, widely used in furniture industry and civil engineering. PB plates can be painted, laminated or veneered, and have…
The composite materials are normally made of reinforcements and resins. High-performance composites are generally termed hybrid composite materials. Generally, fiber-reinforced composite laminates are very weak in their out-of-plane…
The primary objective of this manuscript is studying the effect of T-stress term (T) on the crack propagation angle (CPA) and fracture toughness of in-plane mixed mode loading by utilizing a generalized form of minimum strain energy…
Shear strength is one of the properties often used to qualify a wood species for use in industry. But until now there is no standardized test which allows understanding this phenomenon. This paper constitutes a new approach to study the…
According to Gradient Mechanics (GM), stress fields have to be determined by directly incorporating into the stress analysis a length scale which that takes into account the material microstructural features. This peculiar modus operandi…
In the present work, the fracture resistance of a carbon fiber composite under mode I and mode II loading have been experimentally determined. For the mode I and II, the energy release rate G has been determinate for each material. In some…
