For multiaxially-loaded parts several stress-based fatigue assessment concepts are applicable mostly taking uniaxial test results as basis. These approaches work well in case of proportional loading states, but on contrary, for…
Brittle failure of components weakened by cracks or sharp and blunt V-notches is a topic of active and continuous research. It is attractive for all researchers who face the problem of fracture of materials under different loading…
Welded joints are frequently locations for cracks initiation and propagation that may cause fatigue failure of engineering structures. Biaxial or triaxial stress-strain states are present in the vicinity of welded joints, due to local…
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising way to produce complex structures by adding layers. It arises great interest both in industrial and academic sectors to develop new advanced structured material. To benefit from its advantages, it…
The purpose of this work is to validate the N-SIF, SED and ENS approaches for the fatigue design of austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Literature fatigue data for cruciform welded joints, originally expressed in terms of nominal…
In the present paper, mathematical models are proposed in order to analyze the strength of pinloaded lugs with semi-elliptical crack and through-the-thickness crack. The crack growth investigation of considered crack configurations tackles…
Shrinkage effects on short-term behavior of reinforced concrete elements are often neglected both in design code provisions and in numerical simulations. However, it is known that their influence on serviceability performance can be…
Fatigue design of welded structures is primarily based on a nominal stress; hot spot stress methods or local approaches each having several limitations when coupled with finite element modeling. An alternative recent structural stress…
A class of fatigue crack growth models based on elastic–plastic stress–strain histories at the crack tip region and local strain-life damage models have been proposed in literature. The fatigue crack growth is regarded as a process of…
Europe has a number of ancient riveted metallic bridges, constructed during the second half of the 19th century up to the middle of the 20th century, which are still in operation. In this paper, a unified approach is presented to generate…
The evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of existing buildings is becoming very significant nowadays, especially for ancient masonry structures, that represent the cultural and historical heritage of our countries. In this research, the…
Fracture behavior of adhesive joints is an important topic in structural design of new structural elements or in retrofitting of existing ones. The mechanical models available in literature capable of predicting the failure mode of these…
An experimental campaign was developed to study fatigue crack growth in Haynes 230, a Ni-based superalloy. The effects of crack closure were investigated with digital image correlation, by applying two different approaches. Initially, full…
Structural failure assessment approaches take into account local parameters, specimen geometry, loading and material. In the case of welded joints, in addition to these parameters, consideration must be given to the effect of the…
The paper is related to the assessment of collapse mechanisms of historic masonry structures suffering settlements induced by ground movements. Two numerical strategies are adopted in order to study the influence of the settled zone on the…
