The paper presents development of crack paths in aluminium alloy 2024. Fatigue tests were carried out for specimens with rectangular cross-section. The specimens were put to bending at controlled energy parameter amplitude and bending…
The energy dissipated to the surroundings as heat in a unit volume of material per cycle, Q, was recently proposed by the authors as fatigue damage index and it was successfully applied to correlate fatigue data obtained by carrying out…
The influence of fiber orientation on the crack propagation behavior was studied with single edgenotched specimens which were cut from an injection-molded plate of short-fiber reinforced plastics of polyphenylenesulphide (PPS) reinforced…
Metallic materials dissipate thermal energy when subjected to fatigue. Some of them, due a favorable combination of thermo-physical material properties, exhibit a significant temperature rise, which can be easily measured in-situ by means…
In this paper the fatigue behaviour of a stainless steel AISI 304L is analysed. In the first part of the work the results obtained under constant amplitude fatigue are presented and synthesised in terms of both stress amplitude and energy…
The modified compact tension (MCT) test, though not yet recognized as a valid test for determining fracture energy of concrete, is believed to represent a plausible and suitable alternative versus other well established procedures, such as…
The fatigue behaviour of circumferentially notched specimens made of titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, has been analysed. To investigate the notch effect on the fatigue strength, pure bending, pure torsion and multiaxial bending-torsion fatigue…
Fatigue crack initiation and propagation involve plastic strains that require some work to be done on the material. Most of this irreversible energy is dissipated as heat and consequently the material temperature increases. The heat being…
The influence of temperature on the fatigue properties of pseudoelastic NiTi under low-cycle fatigue are investigated. Tests were performed under the uniaxial tensile deformation (pull-pull) at 0°С and 20°С which is above the austenite…
The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their…
The quickly identify of fatigue limit of a mechanical component with good approximation is currently a significant practical problem not yet resolved in a satisfactory way. Generally, for a mechanical component, the fatigue strength…
The presented work introduces a numerical parametric study on the crack propagation direction under mixed-mode conditions (mode I + II). It is conducted for the geometry of an eccentric asymmetric fourpoint bending of a single edge notched…
On the mode O existence in three-dimensional plates weakened by circular and elliptical holes under mode II loading It is known for long time that in a cracked plate subjected to anti-symmetric plane loading, the Poisson’s effect leads to…
In the last years, a large amount of fatigue test results from plain and bluntly notched specimens made of AISI 304L stainless steel were synthetized in a single scatter band by adopting the specific heat loss per cycle (Q) as a damage…
Experimental indentations are carried out on items of two different materials, taken in several location of various components from high pressure gas turbine rotor which have seen an extensive service. The components object of…
The work reports the observed fatigue damage of C45 steel specimens tested in a previous work under multiaxial loading conditions and its relationship with the thermal energy dissipation which has been used in the last decades to estimate…
The existence of three-dimensional effects at cracks has been known for many years, but understanding has been limited, and for some situations still is. Understanding improved when the existence of corner point singularities and their…
Explicit and simple expressions for root compliance coefficients, which can be used to define root rotations and root displacements at the crack tip cross section of orthotropic cracked beams, are derived under general self-equilibrated…
Laser shock peening (LSP) is used to enhance surface quality of the metallic structures by the generation of compressive residual stresses on it. This work studies the effect of the main LSP parameters on residual stress fields by the…
In the design of adhesive structures, it is extremely important to accurately predict their strength and fracture properties (critical strain energy release rate in tension, GIC, and shear, GIIC). In most cases, the loads occur in…
In this work, numerical analyses on the Volterra’s ancient walls are performed to understand the causes of a collapse occurred after an extreme rainfall (2014) and to identify the mechanical parameters that most influenced it. The stretch…
The paper considers a pro-bionic lattice shell (PBLS) for civil aviation structures and the problem of getting the parameters of a local low-velocity impact taking the value of residual strain by fiber optic sensors (FOS) installed in…
The temporal evolution of the electric activity generated in marble specimens under uniaxial compression is analyzed and quantified in terms of the Pressure Stimulated Voltage (Electric Potential) developed. The evolution of the electric…
