The characterization of ductile damage evolution, and its description, have been the object of extensive research in the continuum damage mechanic field. Many different models have been developed since the pioneering works carried out a…
Ductility in metals includes the material’s capability to tolerate plastic deformations before partial or total degradation of its mechanical properties. Modelling this parameter is important in structure and component design because it…
A set of heterogeneous and homogeneous materials differing in their brittle and ductile characteristics (granite, marble, silica ceramics, silicon carbide, organic glass) were subjected to impact damaging by a falling weight. Multiple…
In this work, the use of circumferentially cracked bar (CCB) sample to determine material fracture toughness in the upper shelf regime for carbon steels has been investigated. Since high fracture toughness materials are known to exhibit…
Some numerical studies of crack propagation are based on using constitutive models that account for damage evolution in the material. When a critical damage value has been reached in a material point, it is natural to assume that this…
Since the end of the last century a lot of research on ductile damaging and fracture process has been carried out. The interest and the attention on the topic are due to several aspects. The margin to reduce the costs of production or…
Initiation and propagation of ductile fractures are a major consideration during the design of high-pressure pipelines. Consequences of a pipeline failure can be catastrophic thus structural integrity must be ensured over several decades.…
In this paper, we developed a mathematical modeling to represent the damage of thermoplastic pipes. On the one hand, we adapted the theories of the rupture pressure to fit the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) case. Indeed, the theories for…
Strain-based design for offshore pipeline requires a considerable experimental work aimed to determine the material fracture toughness and the effective strain capacity of pipe and welds. Continuum damage mechanics can be used to limit the…
Bridges are regarded as one of the most important components of transportation infrastructure. More and more repairs, inspections, alterations, and construction processes are required to maintain safe usage due to increasing travel demands…
The goal of this work is to improve the understanding of the relation between the microstructural characteristics of Intercritical Austempered Ductile Cast Iron (IADI) and the damage micromechanisms observed during its tensile loading. The…
This work is devoted to the application of the micromechanical Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model to study the ductile tearing of 12NiCr6 steel. GTN model is widely used to describe the three stages of ductile tearing: nucleation…
The use of adhesive bonds greatly increased in industrial applications, as they have multiple advantages compared to other more traditional bonding methods (fastened, welded and riveted joints). The number of approaches to predict the…
Some numerical studies of crack propagation are based on using constitutive models that account for damage evolution in the material. When a critical damage value has been reached in a material point, it is natural to assume that this…
The role of structural mechanisms responsible for the consequent staging of damage-failure transition as the combination and continuity of ductile and creep kinetics of the structure evolution and the modeling in dwell fatigue regime.…
This study presents a numerical prediction of the ductile damage for axial cracks in pipe subjected to internal pressure. The three dimensional finite element methods used to evaluate the J-integral. The effect of the external radius (Rext…
During a ferry flight, in a standard operation condition and at cruising level, a military cargo experienced a double hydraulic system failure due to a structural damage of the dual booster actuator. The booster actuator is the main…
Impact resistance and energy absorbing capability are of great interest in the design of composite sandwich structures. This paper experimentally studies damage, failure and energy absorption properties of foam core sandwich panels with…
In this study, we present a new implementation of the phase field fracture approach in the finite element code ANSYS and its numerical background. The framework is general, and is supported by addressing several classical 2D boundary value…
Various failure modes induce localized internal damage and stress concentration sites in power plant components, causing additional plasticity that degrades material strength. Effect on such localized plasticity on components durability…
