Structural components made of fibre-reinforced materials are frequently used in engineering applications. Fibre-reinforced composites are multiphase materials, and complex mechanical phenomena take place at limit conditions but also during…
A new critical plane approach based on the modified Manson-Coffin curve method (MMCCM) is presented in this paper for predicting fatigue lifetime under variable amplitude (VA) multiaxial fatigue loading. The critical plane is assumed to…
Early damage detection plays an essential role in the safe and satisfactory maintenance of structures. This work investigates techniques use only damaged structure responses. A Timoshenko beam was modeled in finite element method, and an…
Materials can be classified as shear or tensile sensitive, depending on the main fatigue microcrack initiation process under multiaxial loadings. The nature of the initiating microcrack can be evaluated from a stress scale factor (SSF)…
This research examines the performance of reinforced lightweight concrete beams subjected to several degrees of damage (50%, 60%, 70%, and 100%). It can use a sheet made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to reinforce. The Full…
Crack propagation in gears is a problem related not only to the life of the components, but also to the concept of failsafe design. Fail safe design means to design a component in order that, if a failure occurs, this may cause a “safe…
The damage development due to externally applied mechanical stress is a hot topic of interest involving several applications of everyday life, like civil engineering, monument restoration, construction evaluation and health monitoring.…
Fatigue life tests under constant and variable amplitude loadings were performed on the tube-tube thin-walled welded specimens made of magnesium (AZ31 and AZ61) alloys. The tests included pure axial, pure torsional and combined in-phase…
In this study, the finite element method is used to analyze the effect of corrosion and the behavior of inclined cracks of an aluminum plate Al 2024 -T3 under thermomechanical loading. The effects of the inclination of the crack and the…
Welded ‘T-junctions’ are tested at different load ratio for constant and variable amplitude loading. Fatigue results are analyzed through the type of fatigue mechanisms depending on the loading type. A gradient approach (WSG: Welded Stress…
Fatigue lifetime assessment is essential in the design of structures. Under-estimated predictions may result in unnecessary in service inspections. Conversely, over-estimated predictions may have serious consequences on the integrity of…
Base isolation is a widely-used method used to minimise the harmful effects of earthquakes on buildings. Unlike a fixed base building, a building with a base isolation system essentially decouples the superstructure from the substructure…
Aircraft have been manufactured for decades using a wide variety of welding and joining techniques. There have been significant developments in techniques over the last 15–20 years. In civil aeronautical industry the main materials used for…
The aim of this work is to investigate the mechanical behavior of sandwich structures when subjected to edgewise and flatwise compression loadings, using 2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC). These structures are made of Glass Fiber…
In a series of applications, steel reinforced concrete structures are subjected to fatigue loads during their service life, what in most cases happens in corrosive environments. Surface treatments have been proved to represent proper…
Industry needs new materials that present very high structural characteristic, such as high strength, low weight and high damage tolerance. To obtain these characteristics a new class of materials has been introduced: Fibre Metal Laminate…
