Engineering components often contain notches, keyways or other stress concentration features. These features raise the stress state in the vicinity of their apex which can lead to unexpected failure of the component. The Theory of Critical…
In this paper the so-called Theory of Critical Distances is reformulated to make it suitable for estimating the strength of notched metals subjected to dynamic loading. The TCD takes as its starting point the assumption that engineering…
This work presents a methodology for life estimation of mechanical couplings subjected to fretting fatigue. In this approach, a stress-based multiaxial fatigue parameter is evaluated at a critical distance below the contact surface. The…
This paper investigates the fracture properties and notch effect of PUR materials with four different densities. The asymmetric semi-circular bend specimen was adapted to perform mixed mode fracture toughness tests. This semi-circular…
The contribution describes the fatigue lifetime predictions of polyethylene notched specimens based on the theory of critical distance. The approach uses the line method, which averages the axial stress over the critical distance. The…
The theory of critical distances (TCD) has been applied to predict notch-based fracture and fatigue in a wide range of materials and components. The present paper describes a series of projects in which we applied this approach to human…
According to Gradient Mechanics (GM), stress fields have to be determined by directly incorporating into the stress analysis a length scale which that takes into account the material microstructural features. This peculiar modus operandi…
This paper aims to investigate the accuracy of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) in estimating static strength of notched additively manufactured PLA as both notch sharpness and infill angle vary. The TCD takes as its starting point…
This paper is concerned with the fracture of composite materials containing stress concentration features such as notches and holes. In particular, it addresses the question of the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) – a method…
Machine learning has emerged as a powerful tool in various scientific fields for developing data-driven models, reducing the need for extensive physical testing. In this study, the fracture load was first predicted using Theory of Critical…
We propose the interpretation of the Finite Fracture Mechanics based on the criticality of damage-failure transition due to specific metastability of free energy release. Multiscale mechanisms of fatigue damage-failure transitions in…
The existence of two singularities related to the stress field at the crack tip and blow-up kinetics of damage localization is considered as the physical basis for the interpretation of the Theory of Critical Distances. The free energy…
The work reviews some preliminary recent micromechanical tests aimed at the evaluation of the fracture toughness of silicon. Pre-cracked nano specimens and alternatively notched nano specimens combined with the theory of critical distances…
Finite Fracture Mechanics and Cohesive Crack Model can effectively predict the strength of plain, cracked or notched structural components, overcoming the classical drawbacks of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Aim of the present work is…
