In-service fatigue cracking of the propeller shafts joined by a spline-pinned construction to the engines of AN-24, AN-26, and IL-18 aircrafts

A. Shanyavskiy, A. Toushentsov

The paper delivers a critical review of the research data on the crack initiation and crack growth patterns characteristic of the components of the spline-bolted joints between the propeller shaft and reducer shaft at An-24, An-26, and…

Crack initiation and propagation paths in small diameter FSW 6082-T6 aluminium tubes under fatigue loading

Roberto Tovo, Luca Susmel, M. Neil James, Danie G. Hattingh, Enrico Maggiolini

This paper reports results of fatigue tests of friction stir welded (FSW) aluminium tubes. Relatively small 38 mm diameter tubes were used and hence an automated FSW process using a retracting tool was designed for this project, as the…

Sharp three-dimensional notches under combined nominal normal and shear fatigue loading

M. Vormwald, E. Shams

Many engineering structures are exposed to non-proportional fatigue loading. However, at the critical location of crack initiation, often only one of the load sequences dominates – the individual load cases result in different crack…

A cohesive zone model to simulate the hydrogen embrittlement effect on a high-strength steel

G. Gobbi, C. Colombo, L. Vergani

The present work aims to model the fracture mechanical behavior of a high-strength low carbon steel, AISI 4130 operating in hydrogen contaminated environment. The study deals with the development of 2D finite element cohesive zone model…

Fatigue behaviour of titanium dental endosseous implants

Ferdinando Felli, Daniela Pilone, Alessandro Scicutelli

In this work two different titanium dental implants are analyzed in order to evaluate their mechanical strength. An ad-hoc designed experimental apparatus is prepared to test against fatigue these implants in a way that approximates as…

Fatigue behaviour of high-strength low-alloy steel sheets: influence of loading direction and microstructure on microcrack initiation and growth

María Cecilia Marinelli, Felipe Díaz, Raúl Bolmaro

This work presents an in-depth study of the low-cycle fatigue behaviour of ferritic-pearlitic HSLA-420 high-strength steel sheets, with emphasis on the influence of loading direction on fatigue life and damage mechanisms. Plastic…
