While it is well known that fatigue crack growth in metals that display confined slip, such as high strength aluminium alloys, develop crack paths that are responsive to the loading direction and the local microstructural orientation, it…
This study compares both uniaxial and multiaxial variable amplitude experimental crack growth data for naturally initiated fatigue cracks in tubular specimens of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy to predictions based on two state-of-the-art analysis…
The influence of the non-proportional loadings on the fatigue life depends on the material ductility. Ductile materials react with a shortening of lifetime compared to proportional loading conditions. For a semiductile material there is…
Most of the prior studies on the prediction of fatigue lives have been limited to uniaxial loading cases, whereas real world loading scenarios are often multiaxial, and the prediction of fatigue life based upon uniaxial fatigue properties…
Fatigue life tests under constant and variable amplitude loadings were performed on the tube-tube thin-walled welded specimens made of magnesium (AZ31 and AZ61) alloys. The tests included pure axial, pure torsional and combined in-phase…
Structural components made of fibre-reinforced materials are frequently used in engineering applications. Fibre-reinforced composites are multiphase materials, and complex mechanical phenomena take place at limit conditions but also during…
Welded ‘T-junctions’ are tested at different load ratio for constant and variable amplitude loading. Fatigue results are analyzed through the type of fatigue mechanisms depending on the loading type. A gradient approach (WSG: Welded Stress…
Multiaxial fatigue is a challenging problem and, consequently, a number of methods has been developed to aid in design of components and assemblies. Following the complexity of the problem, these approaches are often elaborate and it is…
Experimental and numerical studies investigating fatigue crack growth were conducted on flat samples made of stainless steel AISE 304 and titanium alloy Grade 2. The heat flux from the crack tip caused by plastic deformation localization…
Regarding the fatigue behaviour of EN AC-42000 T6 (A 356 T6), which is the most frequently used cast aluminium alloy for automotive safety components, especially under non-proportional constant and variable normal and shear stress…
Cracks at notches deserve special consideration in the design of steam turbine components. This work is addressed to investigate the crack initiation behavior a 10%Cr rotor steel with the help of notched specimens under service-type…
In this paper, fatigue crack growth of edge crack in 2024 T351 aluminum alloy plate repaired with bonded composite patch under constant and variable amplitude loading (VAL) was predicted. The Al-alloy plate was repaired with symmetric…
The Miner number M, used as a tool for lifetime prediction of mechanical and structural components in most of the standards related to fatigue design, is generally accepted as representing a damage stage resulting from a linear progression…
The aim of the present paper is to systematically investigate the accuracy of the so-called Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM) in estimating high-cycle fatigue strength of plain and notched engineering materials damaged by in-service…
The paper analyses previously reported work, which uses digital image correlation to measure fatigue crack closure. As well as determining crack opening loads, the information on crack shape may be used to estimate the stress intensity…
Materials can be classified as shear or tensile sensitive, depending on the main fatigue microcrack initiation process under multiaxial loadings. The nature of the initiating microcrack can be evaluated from a stress scale factor (SSF)…
The premature contact of crack surfaces attributable to the near-tip plastic deformations under cyclic loading, which is commonly referred to as plasticity induced crack closure (PICC), has long been focused as supposedly controlling…
In the current work an experimental study of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) is performed to evaluate the ability of this parameter to characterise fatigue crack growth. A methodology is developed to measure and to analyse the…
Manufacturing defects are inherent to any manufacturing process. However, in composite materials they might be unavoidable, e.g. ply waviness or even folds of plies are present in complex shaped parts during high pressure resin transfer…
The work is devoted to experimental study of heat flow evolution at the fatigue crack tip during biaxial loading. The plane samples of titanium alloy Graid-2 with thick of 1 mm were weakened by notch to initiate fatigue crack at the center…
The microstructural origins of premature fatigue failures were investigated on a variety of forged components manufactured from AZ80 and ZK60 magnesium, both at the test specimen level and the full-scale component level. Both stress and…
In this investigation, fatigue criterion was established to predict crack-initiation at the tip of a notch in aged hardening aluminum alloy. This criterion was used to predict the residual lifetime in aeronautical structures using concept…
This paper presents the development of the multiple linear regression approach based on the stress ratio and applied load that was assessed using entropy generation. The energy dissipation is associated with material degradation to…
