Models proposed to study the multiaxial fatigue damage phenomenon generally lack probabilistic interpretation due to their deterministic form. This implies failure compulsory happening at the plane exhibiting the maximum damage value…
This study represents a methodology to assess the probability of failure based on three the driving force formulations defined by the corresponding brittle and ductile fracture criteria for compact and bending specimens made of 34XH3MA and…
The Miner number M, used as a tool for lifetime prediction of mechanical and structural components in most of the standards related to fatigue design, is generally accepted as representing a damage stage resulting from a linear progression…
The paper proposes a parallel extension of the Direct Optimized Probability Computation Method. This method can be used as an alternative to Monte Carlo – based approaches for problems of structural reliability. It does not depend on any…
This paper presents a study of the application of Leak-Before-Break (LBB) to nuclear piping using three different materials. Based on the fracture mechanics, the LBB concept considers that a leakage from a crack can be detected before it…
The object of this article is to be able to simulate the behavior of reinforced and/or prestressed concrete beam’s section in the shear loading through a model allowing the evaluation of nonlinear strains caused by shear, while taking into…
The structural integrity and reliability of glass components are key issues for concentrated solar power (CSP) systems. For example, the glass windows in a solar furnace may suffer catastrophic fracture due to thermal and structural…
Learning from history is, by popular account, something at which human beings are not particularly good; George Bernard Shaw having stated that “we learn from history that we learn nothing from history”, while the Spanish philosopher…
Different options that rely on fracture mechanics are currently used in engineering during the design and assessment of components. One of the most important aspects is the time taken for a crack to extend to its critical size. If this…
The ground external columns of buildings are vulnerable to the extreme actions such as a vehicle collision. This event is a common scenario of buildings' damages. In this study, a nonlinear model of 2-story steel moment-resisting frame (…
The safety of dams is a priority at the international level, based on a large amount of data from a dam-reservoir allows analysts to make optimization on its structural stability, the latter is based on the estimation of the probability of…
This paper presents the behaviour of fatigue damage extraction in fatigue strain histories of automotive components using the probabilistic approach. This is a consideration for the evaluation of fatigue damage extraction in automotive…
This study presents a numerical prediction of the ductile damage for axial cracks in pipe subjected to internal pressure. The three dimensional finite element methods used to evaluate the J-integral. The effect of the external radius (Rext…
This work describes a two-dimensional numerical model that allows detecting the appearance of cracks and calculating their propagation in elements made of laminated bamboo, under tension and shear. This composite material has long parallel…
Limit equilibrium engineering analysis needs the incorporation of probabilistic approaches for the determination of soil strength statistical measures for deterministic and probabilistic analyses. For the commonly used Mohr–Coulomb…
This study presents a three dimensional finite element method analysis of semi-elliptical surface cracks in pipes under internal pressure load. In the elastic–plastic case, estimates of the J-integral are presented for various ratios…
Risk based analysis of reverse hydro power plant penstock structural integrity is performed using fracture mechanics parameters. To assess its structural integrity, extensive testing of the full-scale prototype had been performed…
