Review of the Influence of non-singular higher order terms on the stress field of thin welded lap joints and small inclined cracks in plates

F. Berto, M.R. Ayatollahi, S. Vantadori, A. Carpinteri

In stress analysis of cracked plates, alongside the stress intensity factor which quantifies the singular stress component perpendicular to the crack plane, the role played in crack growth by the constant term parallel to the crack plane…

Revisiting classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics - Part III: The stress field in a double-edge notched finite strip by means of the “stress-neutralization” technique

Christos F. Markides, Stavros K Kourkoulis

This is the third part of a short series of paper, revisiting some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Based on the solution for the single edge notched strip, discussed in Part-II, the present study deals with the…

Coupled fracture modes under anti-plane loading

Les P. Pook, F. Berto, A. Campagnolo

The linear elastic analysis of homogeneous, isotropic cracked bodies is a Twentieth Century development. It was recognised that the crack tip stress field is a singularity, but it was not until the introduction of the essentially two…

Stress intensity factors for through clad and underclad defects in a WWER type reactor pressure vessel in pressurised thermal shock analysis

Vitalii Antonchenko, Yaroslav Dubyk, Volodymyr Iasnii

This study develops stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions for cladded WWER reactor pressure vessel nozzles subjected to pressurised thermal shock loading. Although finite element analysis is widely used for fracture assessment…

Multi-parameter crack tip stress state description for estimation of fracture process zone extent in silicate composite WST specimens

Václav Veselý, Jakub Sobek, Lucie Šestáková, Petr Frantík, Stanislav Seitl

For wedge splitting test specimens, the stress and displacement fields both in the vicinity and also in larger distance from the crack tip are investigated by means of numerical methods. Several variants of boundary conditions were…

The crack path in fuselage panel under mixed mode biaxial loading

Alexander Zakharov, Valery Shlyannikov, Andrey Tumanov

This paper provides the background for practical applications of nonlinear fracture resistance parameters for structural integrity assessment of aviation structures with initial cracks. The subject of this numerical study is a fragment of…

Stress Intensity Factor Solutions for CTS Mixed Mode Specimen

Fernando Ventura Antunes, Ricardo Branco, José António Martins Ferreira, Luís Borrego

The Compact Tension Shear (CTS) specimen is used to study fracture and fatigue under mixed mode I/II loading conditions. Existing K solution was developed for fracture studies and it does not consider the effect of crack deflection. The…

Revisiting classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics - Part II: Stretching finite strips weakened by single edge parabolically-shaped notches

Christos F. Markides, Stavros K Kourkoulis

This is the second part of a short three-paper series, aiming to revisit some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Being the intermediate step of the analysis between infinite domains (discussed in Part-I) and finite…
