In engineering applications, fatigue phenomenon is a key issue and needs to be analyzed in the beginning of design phase in case of any component exposed to alternating loading on operation otherwise catastrophic fatigue failure may cause.…
The goal of the authors’ investigations was determination of the fatigue crack growth in fragments of steel structures (of the puddled steel) and its cyclic behavior. Tested steel elements coming from the turn of the 19th and 20th were…
This study reports an experimental investigation of the fatigue and fracture resistance of R350HT, a heat-treated pearlitic rail steel with refined microstructure used in rails. Monotonic tensile, rotating bending, linear elastic plane…
This work constitutes a contribution to the analysis of the behavior of beams reinforced by composite materials. The analysis was made by a study on concrete elements, and in pre-cracked reinforced concrete then reinforced with carbon…
This study aims at assessing the impact of casting size on the bainitic transformation, resulting microstructures, and tensile properties of a high-carbon, high-silicon steel austempered at different temperatures. The casting size was…
The main purpose of this paper is to study the anisotropic behavior of laser welded interstitial free steel HC 260Y when it is subjected to monotonic tensile tests. The specimens were cut in different orientations according to the rolling…
This paper presents a research about the monotonic and failure behaviours of bolted joints made of thin plates of S350GD and S355MC steels grades, which are used for rack structures. A full factorial test matrix was performed considering…
Additive manufacturing (AM) could be used to reduce the production times of prototypes; however, further research is required to address metals structural parts. To obtain the correct properties, some relevant factors to be considered are…
Initiation and propagation of ductile fractures are a major consideration during the design of high-pressure pipelines. Consequences of a pipeline failure can be catastrophic thus structural integrity must be ensured over several decades.…
Mounting stiffness has an important impact on a system’s structural dynamics and also on the durability of many structures. Mounts with tunable stiffness allow adapting a system’s structural dynamic behavior. Furthermore, they can be used…
In Portugal there is a number of old metallic riveted railway and highway bridges that were erected by the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, and are still in operation, requiring inspections and remediation…
Monitoring the energy release during fatigue tests of common engineering materials has been shown to give relevant information on fatigue properties, reducing the testing time and material consumption. During a static tensile test, it is…
This paper presents a study of the application of Leak-Before-Break (LBB) to nuclear piping using three different materials. Based on the fracture mechanics, the LBB concept considers that a leakage from a crack can be detected before it…
This study represents a methodology to assess the probability of failure based on three the driving force formulations defined by the corresponding brittle and ductile fracture criteria for compact and bending specimens made of 34XH3MA and…
The company DRC (pipe repair Department) located within the SONATRACH Company of oil and gas in Algeria, which is responsible for the repair of pipelines for the transport of gas or crude petroleum, will rehabilitate old pipes that have…
In the current work 17-4PH Stainless Steel is deposited using SLM process. It is widely used to build structural parts appropriate for automotive, medical, and aerospace applications. The 17-4 PH SS samples were deposited using technical…
In this paper, we developed a mathematical modeling to represent the damage of thermoplastic pipes. On the one hand, we adapted the theories of the rupture pressure to fit the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) case. Indeed, the theories for…
The problem of constructing the multilevel physical model of inelastic deformation in steels allowing to take into consideration diffusionless solid-state phase (martensitic) transitions is considered. The model structure includes three…
