The aim of this paper is to calculate how the surface crack front and the dimensionless compliance evolve in cracked cylindrical bars subjected to cyclic tension or bending with different initial crack geometries (crack depths and aspect…
The fatigue behaviour of concrete has become more important for the design of constructions due to the desire to build slimmer structures, which are more sensitive to fatigue loading. This article aims to evaluate and compare the fatigue…
Nowadays the demand for high strength steels is increasing. In order to design and develop high performance products, it is essential to understand the fatigue behavior of these materials. When considering welded components, the fatigue…
This paper describes a study of recycled concrete under compressive loads. The study was conducted in two main parts. In the first part, experimental tests were carried out on concrete samples with varying levels of substitution (25%, 50%…
The criteria for optimizing shock-wave modes to increase the fatigue life of aircraft engine alloys are discussed with reference to laser shock peening (LSP). They are based on the self-similarity of plastic wave fronts and the kinetics of…
In this paper we investigated the influence of consecutive dynamic and gigacycle fatigue loads on the lifetime of aluminum-magnesium alloy AlMg6. Preloading of samples was achieved during dynamic tensile tests in the split-Hopkinson bar…
Fretting fatigue experiments aim to represent industrial problems and most of them endure variable loading. Being able to assess lifetime of assemblies, especially for low propagation rate conditions, is essential as experimental…
In Portugal there is a number of old metallic riveted railway and highway bridges that were erected by the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, and are still in operation, requiring inspections and remediation…
Due to their severe operating conditions, many industrial components are subjected to complex combinations of cyclic mechanical stresses and thermal pressures. These combinations are responsible for the initiation and propagation of…
