This paper analyses how the microstructure of an eutectoid pearlitic steel affects its conventional mechanical properties (obtained by means of a standard tension test) and the associated micromechanisms of fracture. Results show how the…
A criterion for the prediction of the static failure loads in tensile PMMA specimens with sharp notches is presented. The proposed criterion is based on a regularized version of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM), which has been…
An analysis focused on capturing the phenomenon of quasibrittle fracture is presented. Selected parameters relevant for quasi-brittle fracture are evaluated and an assessment of their dependence on the size and shape of the test specimen…
In the case of quasi-brittle material, there is a zone of non-linear behaving material, near the crack tip. A major part of this zone forms a socalled fracture process zone (FPZ), where mechanisms of material toughening take place. The…
Concrete is a porous material containing aggregate of different sizes, hardened cement matrix with air pores, microcracks and water. Concrete internal structure is different from that of other engineering materials. Furthermore concrete is…
The concept of the average stress has been employed to propose the maximum average tangential stress (MATS) criterion for predicting the direction of fracture angle. This criterion states that a crack grows when the maximum average…
The fracture behavior of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete is characterized by the presence of a fracture process zone (FPZ) that precedes the main crack. Within this zone, various mechanisms, including the formation of microcracks…
An inhomogeneous distribution of non-metallic inclusions can result from the steel casting process. The aim of the present study was to investigate the damaging effect of an inhomogeneous distribution of nonmetallic inclusions on the crack…
The fracture process zone (FPZ) was investigated on unnotched and notched beams with different notch depths. Three point bending tests were realized on plain concrete under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control. Crack growth was…
Cutting processes affect the material to a deeper or shallower attached-to-the-cut zone. Its microstructure, its hardness and mechanical properties are changed. Also the cutting process introduces surface roughness and residual stresses.…
For wedge splitting test specimens, the stress and displacement fields both in the vicinity and also in larger distance from the crack tip are investigated by means of numerical methods. Several variants of boundary conditions were…
In oil drilling, one of the most complicated problems is borehole stability of shale. Based on the theory of continuum damage mechanics, a modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion according to plastic damage evolution and the seepage-stress…
Simulating the concrete fracture unlike other elastic and brittle materials quite different due to its quasibrittleness. The present research focussed on assess softening behavior by varying different fractions of aggregates and cement…
Fields of stress, strain rate and process zone of a mode I creep crack growth are analyzed by employing damage evolution equations. Damage models for fracture of process zone represented by stress based formulation. Two expressions are…
When the width of cracked nanocomponents made of brittle or quasi-brittle materials is less than approximately , the size of the - dominance zone becomes smaller than and comparable to the fracture process zone ( ). The fracture process…
In this study, we present a new implementation of the phase field fracture approach in the finite element code ANSYS and its numerical background. The framework is general, and is supported by addressing several classical 2D boundary value…
The present study is concerned with formulation of a model for the creep–fatigue crack growth rate prediction on the base of fracture damage zone concepts. It is supposed that crack growth rate can be determined by integration of damage…
Fracture behavior of adhesive joints is an important topic in structural design of new structural elements or in retrofitting of existing ones. The mechanical models available in literature capable of predicting the failure mode of these…
Some numerical studies of crack propagation are based on using constitutive models that account for damage evolution in the material. When a critical damage value has been reached in a material point, it is natural to assume that this…
In this paper the process of dynamic indentation, causing deformation and fracture of alumina ceramics, is investigated. The dynamic indentation experiments were carried out on the original setup based on the split Hopkinson bar technique.…
Looking at the long-time behaviour of a dam, it is necessary to assume that the water can penetrate a possible crack washing away some components of the concrete. This type of corrosion reduces the tensile strength and fracture energy of…
In fracture mechanics (domain of cracked environments), it is concerned to forecast the behavior of the structures until their ruin. Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a new process for solid-state joining, it can weld high strength aluminum…
The stress, strain rate and process zone with respect to the creep-crack growth are analyzed by employing damage-evolution equations. The damage models for the fracture of the process zone are represented using a stress and ductility based…
This paper is concerned with the fracture of composite materials containing stress concentration features such as notches and holes. In particular, it addresses the question of the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) – a method…
In the present paper, mathematical models are proposed in order to analyze the strength of pinloaded lugs with semi-elliptical crack and through-the-thickness crack. The crack growth investigation of considered crack configurations tackles…
Some numerical studies of crack propagation are based on using constitutive models that account for damage evolution in the material. When a critical damage value has been reached in a material point, it is natural to assume that this…
