Fatigue assessment of welded joints by means of the Strain Energy Density method: Numerical predictions and comparison with Eurocode 3: Numerical predictions and comparison with Eurocode 3

Pietro Foti, Filippo Berto, Stefano Filippi

The main aim of the present work is to investigate the effects of different parameters on the fatigue strength of four different welded details through an energetic approach based on the Strain Energy Density failure criteria. The results…

An experimental study into the net cross-sectional failure of damaged plates with holes for different steel grades and temperatures

Davide Leonetti, Bo van Schuppen, Maryam Jahanian, Sumya Mobder, Bert Snijder

This study reports an experimental investigation on the applicability of the net cross-sectional resistance rules of Eurocode 3 for steel plates with different bolt-hole configurations and steel grades, when relatively small fatigue cracks…

Comparative study of multiaxial fatigue methods applied to welded joints in marine structures

P.S. van Lieshout, J.H. den Besten, M.L. Kaminski

Marine structures are particularly prone to action of waves, winds and currents with stochastically varying composition, intensities and directions. Therefore, resultant stresses may cause multiaxial fatigue in specific welded structural…

Load bearing capacity of thin-walled rectangular and I-shaped steel sections of short both empty and concrete-filled columns

Amor Bouaricha, Naoual Handel, Aziza Boutouta, Sarah Djouimaa

In this experimental work, strength results obtained on short columns subjected to concentric loads are presented. The specimens used in the tests have made of cold-rolled, thin-walled steel. Twenty short columns of the same cross-section…

Strengthening of steel I-Section girder web with depth discontinuity against localized buckling

Amin Almasri, Mohammad Nadeem Akhtar

Stepped steel girders and beams with a jump in section depth are highly susceptible to local web buckling at the step location. Although tapered steel girders have been studied extensively by researchers, abruptly stepped steel girders…

Experimental and numerical investigation of gap K-joints of rectangular hollow section trusses

Faycal Slimani, Mohammed Benzerara, Messaoud Saidani

This paper is concerned with investigating of the plastic behaviour on gap K-joints of truss girders, made from thin-walled rectangular hollow section members. An experimental study was carried out on a full-scale girder under a…

Numerical study of the plasticity effect on the behavior of short steel columns filled with concrete loaded axially

Yousria Boulmaali-Hacene Chaouche, Nadia Kouider, Kamel Djeghaba, Bachir Kebaili

For more than two decades, the construction technique using concrete filled steel tube (CFST) has been widespread throughout the world. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that the use of normal or high strength concrete, confined in a steel…
