The aim of the paper is to estimate a value of the critical applied stress for a crack initiation from a sharp V-notch tip. The classical approach of the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LELM) was generalized, because the stress…
This work presents a methodology for life estimation of mechanical couplings subjected to fretting fatigue. In this approach, a stress-based multiaxial fatigue parameter is evaluated at a critical distance below the contact surface. The…
Engineering components often contain notches, keyways or other stress concentration features. These features raise the stress state in the vicinity of their apex which can lead to unexpected failure of the component. The Theory of Critical…
The contribution describes the fatigue lifetime predictions of polyethylene notched specimens based on the theory of critical distance. The approach uses the line method, which averages the axial stress over the critical distance. The…
In this paper the so-called Theory of Critical Distances is reformulated to make it suitable for estimating the strength of notched metals subjected to dynamic loading. The TCD takes as its starting point the assumption that engineering…
The aim of this work is to investigate stress gradient effects on the fatigue life estimation of notched Al 7050-T7451 specimens under combined torsion and push-pull loading conditions. Initially, simple push-pull and torsion fatigue tests…
In the present paper, the multiaxial fatigue life assessment of notched structural components is performed by employing a strain-based multiaxial fatigue criterion. Such a criterion, depending on the critical plane concept, is extended by…
Rectangular lateral notches are not common engineering components, thus little research attention has been directed towards the investigation of their stress field properties. Indeed, no in-depth investigations have been conducted to date…
The paper contains plane strain analysis of uniformly stretched plate working in creep condition. The plate contains initial defects in forms of central and/or edge cracks working in mode I. These cracks are modelled by attributing…
This paper presents two multiaxial fatigue life prediction models applied to a commercial dental implant. One model is called Variable Initiation Length Model and takes into account both the crack initiation and propagation phases. The…
Under the typical partial slip conditions under which fretting fatigue takes place, the amount of superficial damage is small. Therefore, the substantial reduction in fatigue life caused by fretting, when compared to plain fatigue, may…
This paper is concerned with the fracture of composite materials containing stress concentration features such as notches and holes. In particular, it addresses the question of the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) – a method…
In this work different strategies to estimate crack path for cylindrical contacts under fretting conditions are carried out. The main goal is to propose and to evaluate methodologies not only to estimate the direction of crack initiation…
According to Gradient Mechanics (GM), stress fields have to be determined by directly incorporating into the stress analysis a length scale which that takes into account the material microstructural features. This peculiar modus operandi…
This paper aims to investigate the accuracy of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) in estimating static strength of notched additively manufactured PLA as both notch sharpness and infill angle vary. The TCD takes as its starting point…
In real industrial conditions, it’s common to witness the interaction of multiple cracks such that their stress fields and crack driving forces are disturbed. For coplanar cracks, a greater hazard is expected because of the amplification…
The bending configuration of shrink-fitted connection fretting fatigue tests causes a fluctuation of the contact pressure and in turn a more favourable condition for shear, rather than tensile, crack initiation. According to the…
The present paper is concerned with the formulation of an elasto-plastic strain based approach suitable for assessing fatigue strength of notched components subjected to in-service variable amplitude cyclic loading. The hypothesis is…
This research present a novel investigation, which focuses on the numerical exploration of steel columns having a double curvature, built with both hollow square and circular cross-sections. A finite element model was initially created…
This is the third part of a short series of paper, revisiting some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Based on the solution for the single edge notched strip, discussed in Part-II, the present study deals with the…
This work deals with investigations of the stress field distribution around a steel anchor embedded in a concrete. Tensile loading - pulling force of the steel anchor is considered, which is very often connected to concrete cone failure.…
