In this work it is proposed a methodology for the evaluation of plasticity-induced crack shielding from the analysis of the crack tip displacements fields measured by digital image correlation. This methodology is based on the evaluation…
Near tip full-field strains in a growing fatigue crack have been studied in situ using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique in a compact tension specimen of stainless steel 316L under tension-tension cyclic loading. An error…
In the current work an experimental study of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) is performed to evaluate the ability of this parameter to characterise fatigue crack growth. A methodology is developed to measure and to analyse the…
The weight function method provides a powerful and reliable tool for the determination of the stress intensity factor around the crack tip in a linearly elastic cracked solid subjected to arbitrary loading conditions. However, it is…
The paper describes an experiment which performs in-situ loading of a small compact tension specimen in a scanning electron microscope. Images are collected throughout a number of successive loadincg cycles. These are then analysed using…
In the last two decades, visual image techniques such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) enabled to experimentally determine the crack tip displacement and strain fields at small scales. The displacements are tracked during loading, and…
The current work presents an experimental study on the use of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) to evaluate its ability to characterise fatigue crack growth. A methodology is developed to measure and to analyse the CTOD from…
A study on the approximation of the stress field in the vicinity of crack tip in a compact tension specimen made from Al 2024-T351 is presented. Crack tip stress tensor components are expressed using the linear elastic fracture mechanics…
Explicit and simple expressions for root compliance coefficients, which can be used to define root rotations and root displacements at the crack tip cross section of orthotropic cracked beams, are derived under general self-equilibrated…
This paper introduces the use of digital image correlation for the measurement of surface displacements in the neighbourhood of a crack tip, both at the macro- and micro- scale. Various methods of interpreting the measured data and…
Elber's hypothesis that DeltaKeff can be assumed as the driving force for fatigue crack growth (FCG) is the basis for strip-yield models widely used to predict fatigue lives under variable amplitude loads, although it does not explain all…
Digital image correlation (DIC) is a technique in experimental mechanics to acquire full-field measurement data of displacements and deformations from the surface of specimens or components. Especially for the investigations of cracks it…
