Revisiting classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics - Part III: The stress field in a double-edge notched finite strip by means of the “stress-neutralization” technique

Christos F. Markides, Stavros K Kourkoulis

This is the third part of a short series of paper, revisiting some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Based on the solution for the single edge notched strip, discussed in Part-II, the present study deals with the…

Parametric study of the deformation of transversely isotropic discs under diametral compression

Christos F. Markides, Stavros K. Kourkoulis

The displacement field in a circular disc made of a transversely isotropic material is explored in a parametric manner. The disc is assumed to be loaded by a parabolic distribution of compressive radial stresses along two finite arcs of…

Revisiting classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics - Part II: Stretching finite strips weakened by single edge parabolically-shaped notches

Christos F. Markides, Stavros K Kourkoulis

This is the second part of a short three-paper series, aiming to revisit some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Being the intermediate step of the analysis between infinite domains (discussed in Part-I) and finite…

Analytical and numerical study of the stress field in a circular semi- ring under combined diametral compression and bending

Stavros K Kourkoulis, Ermioni D. Pasiou, Christos F. Markides

The stress field developed in a circular semi-ring under the combined action of diametral compression and bending is explored both analytically and numerically. The analytic solution is implemented by means of the complex potentials…

Microcrack interaction with circular inclusion and interfacial zone

Tomas Profant, Miroslav Hrstka, Jan Klusak

A geometrically simplified plane elasticity problem of a finite small crack emanating from a thin interfacial zone surrounding the circular inclusion situated in the finite bounded domain is investigated. The crack is arbitrarily oriented…

Revisiting classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics - Part I: The closing ‘mathematical’ crack in an infinite plate and the respective Stress Intensity Factors

Christos Markides, Stavros K Kourkoulis

This is the first part of a short three-paper series, aiming to revisit some classical concepts of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. The motive of this first paper is to highlight some controversial issues, related to the unnatural…
