Fatigue crack paths and properties in A356-T6 aluminum alloy microstructurally modified by friction stir processing under different conditions

A. Tajiri, Y. Uematsu, T. Kakiuchi, Y. Suzuki

A356-T6 cast aluminum alloy is a light weight structural material, but fatigue crack initiates and propagates from a casting defect leading to final fracture. Thus it is important to eliminate casting defects. In this study, friction stir…

Predicting fatigue limits of defective A356-T6 and A357-T6 cast aluminum alloys using a hybrid empirical–machine learning approach

Nesrine Majed, Anouar Nasr, Wided Bel Haj Sghaier, Marwa Youssef

The present study develops a knowledge-based machine learning framework for estimating the fatigue life of Al alloy using a combination of data-driven models and an empirical equation. Three different ML models were developed and tested…

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Cast Alloy A356 reinforced with Dual-Size B4C Particles

J. R. Chandrashekar, M. H. Annaiah, R. Chandrashekar

The paper details the studies carried out on a dual-size particulate composite prepared by stir casting using A 356 aluminum alloy and B₄C powders. Three composite compositions, viz., A356 plus 2% B₄C (44µm size and 105µm size in 1:1…

Ultrasonic fatigue testing device under biaxial bending

C. Brugger, T. Palin-Luc, P. Osmond, M. Blanc

A new fatigue testing device has been developed to test specimens under biaxial loading at 20 kHz. A flat smooth specimen with a disc geometry is placed on a torus frame and cyclically loaded at the center of its upper face. Disc bending…
