Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, mechanical fragmentation, rock slope analysis, geophysics, earthquake mechanics and many other science and technology fields. Development of failure in…
Two experimental techniques are used study the response of cement mortar beams subjected to three-point bending under various loading protocols. The techniques used are the detection of weak electric current emissions known as Pressure…
It can facilitate the understanding of the mechanical properties and failure laws of rocks to research on the rock failure mechanism and evolution characteristics of Acoustic Emission (AE). Under the concentrated loading condition, the…
The fracture process zone (FPZ) was investigated on unnotched and notched beams with different notch depths. Three point bending tests were realized on plain concrete under crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) control. Crack growth was…
The damage development due to externally applied mechanical stress is a hot topic of interest involving several applications of everyday life, like civil engineering, monument restoration, construction evaluation and health monitoring.…
The temporal evolution of the electric activity generated in marble specimens under uniaxial compression is analyzed and quantified in terms of the Pressure Stimulated Voltage (Electric Potential) developed. The evolution of the electric…
The efficiency of two modern sensing techniques, namely the “Acoustic Emissions” and the “Pressure Stimulated Currents” ones, when they are used as Continuous Structural Health Monitoring tools, is assessed experimentally. The protocol…
The spatiotemporal evolution of damage in marble specimens under uniaxial compression is monitored using Pressure Stimulated Currents (PSCs) and Acoustic Emissions (AEs). The novelty of the study is the use of an integrated grid of…
Taking advantage of the interevent time intervals, namely the time intervals between two successive acoustic events recorded during mechanical loading of structural elements, it is attempted to detect indices warning about upcoming…
Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) have been used during the last decades in the demolition of boulders and concrete structures as well as in open-surface and sub-surface rock excavation, as an alternative to the use of…
The so-called Complexity Sciences are a topic of fast growing interest inside the scientific community. Actually, researchers did not come to a definition of complexity, since it manifests itself in so many different ways [1]. This field…
The experience gathered during the implementation of long series of laboratory experimental protocols, aiming to study the mechanical response of restored structural elements, is summarized. Conclusions are drawn concerning the proper…
